Job Summary This paragraph summarizes the general nature, level and purpose of the job. Under the supervision of a licensed orthodontist, the orthodontic assistant primarily assists with patient procedures, responsible for the setup and cleanup process, as well as oversees material management related to this service. Provides chairside assisting, chair set-up and chair break-down and sterilizes all equipment. The assistant works closely with patients and the clinical team to help schedule appointments and ensure all patient information and charting is completed before and after visits. Essential Functions The essential functions listed are typical examples of work performed by positions in this job classification. Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital’s policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct. Assists with orthodontic procedures performed by orthodontist, along with setup and cleanup of activities. Provides orthodontic patient care in all hospitals settings (inpatient, ambulatory, and OR) including to procedure setup and cleanup. Changes arch wires, unties, and reties using single color ties, stainless steel ties, and power chains. Prepares for bonding and banding procedures, place the orthodontic cheek retractor, and place brackets intraorally and call for the doctor¿s final placement. Cure the bonding material. Takes braces and/or expanders off and clean the residual material to be confirmed by the doctor. Breaks down the instruments before starting the procedure and wrap up the instruments after the procedures following the universal infection control protocol. Assists the doctor chairside for surgical procedures and provide the doctor¿s instructions to the patient. Checks the fit of the lab works intraorally and have the doctor confirm and help finalize the installation. Takes impressions and trim the stone model, place labels on the models according to the doctor¿s instruction for record keeping. Fits bands and takes the pick-up impressions Sends out orthodontic lab works to the outside lab and check their return before patient¿s next visit date Takes intraoral and extraoral photos by the orthodontic photo standards and upload to Dolphin software. Communicates effectively with patients to perform patient intake, imaging, and provide education on next steps on care (including post-surgical procedural care). Generates clinic data for analysis, per MD instructions. Manages orthodontic supplies and equipment. Checks, orders, and re-stocks inventory in a timely manner Makes essix retainers and have them ready in the retainer case with names on Uses intraoral scanners for records and invisalign treatment Takes iCAT and upload to Dolphin software Manages to have sufficient instruments are ready each procedure during the day Cleans and organizes the operatory and supplies containers for cleanness and tidiness at all time Opens the chart and open the proper instrument set and have all materials/ supplies ready for use for each patient. Sends out the used instruments to the hospital¿s central sterilization facility and checks their returns in a timely manner. Makes notes in the Epic for the procedures done at each visit and have the doctor¿s review and edit. Also type in the Epic the conversation of the doctor and the family on site for the doctor¿s review and edit. Schedules the next appointment at the end of the visit. Reviews charts and schedules for the upcoming week to ensure all information needed is available and all coordination with other specialties has been communicated Generates lists of information in excel spreadsheet, following doctor¿s instructions. Prepares things in advance for a smooth clinical flow for the times when the assistant is on vacation or off duty. Prepares the clinic ready to avoid any predictable interferences during the clinic hour. Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying. Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited school. Experience: Three (3) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience as an orthodontic assistant. License/Certification: Current American Heart Association (AHA) Certification for Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or licensure/certification. Knowledge in terminology for orthodontic material, supplies, and instruments. Knowledge of proper protocols related to sanitation and safety procedures around equipment sterilization. Knowledge how to sterilize the dirty instruments using the ultrasound cleaner and autoclave. Ability to communicate with a positive attitude for learning Ability to be adaptive to changes, and new approaches in conjunction with the provider's instructions Ability to provide exemplary patient care in terms of scheduling, treatment, and coordination of other appointments as necessary Ability to perform chart review and documentation for patient intake and procedures performed at the organization.
