Function / Position Summary
Oversee the daily operations of the assigned building under the supervision of the Building Administrator and the Coordinator of Custodial services. Responsible for the maintenance of equipment and mechanical systems, and communicating operational problems above their level of expertise to the appropriate person(s). Maintain a clean and properly functioning building throughout the school day, providing staff and students with a safe, clean, and comfortable learning environment.

Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Custodial duties, including, but not limited to, mopping, sweeping, floor stripping and waxing - carpet cleaning, restroom cleaning and maintenance, ceiling tile and light replacement, univent and filter changes, furniture repair and assembly/adjustment, locker repairs, minor painting, trash removal, graffiti removal, daily and special event set ups, daily breakfast and lunch program set up and clean up.
  • Assist coordinator in the establishment of custodian regular work schedules.
  • Schedule overtime with Plant Operations to cover approved outside activities and special problems.
  • Responsible for checking and logging building systems status on a daily basis, and notify Plant Operations of any problems.
  • Responsible for completing daily/weekly/monthly inspections of mobile classrooms, fire and security alarms, roofs, back-up generators, boilers and completing appropriate paperwork.
  • Maintain a status of "On Call" for building emergencies, break-ins, fire, and security alarms. When contacted, assess and take appropriate measures to deem the building secure and operational, notifying/updating appropriate staff of ongoing status of situation.
  • Document and maintain inventory, ordering supplies as needed.
  • Responsible for initiating, monitoring, and completing work orders and requests through computerized work order and email systems.
  • Assume general responsibility for building mechanical systems, maintenance and cleanliness, reporting major problems to Plant Operations.
  • Assist and provide guidance to maintenance and/or grounds staff, as needed.
  • Work as a team member with contract cleaners/supervisors to ensure building needs are met.
  • Responsible for grounds upkeep, landscape maintenance, and snow and ice removal and salting (before and after hours during the winter months).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid Illinois Driver's License Preferred.

Experience / Knowledge
  • Must pass a written skills test related to building mechanical systems, plumbing, electrical, and safety procedures to qualify for an interview.
  • Basic computer knowledge and knowledge of computer assisted HVAC systems, to record and maintain written records.
  • Possess thorough knowledge of the methods, material, and equipment used in building care and cleaning.
  • Ability to operate, troubleshoot, and perform maintenance and repairs on mechanical and building equipment, including, but not limited to temperature controls, boilers, air conditioning, and air handling equipment.
  • Experience with all types of electric service and the ability to troubleshoot, and perform minor repairs.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of school building mechanical systems.
  • Three to five (3-5) years' experience in custodial related duties.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to sit, stand, kneel, stoop, climb stairs, and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs. with proper technique.
  • Ability to work safely on ladders.

Terms of Employment
  • This is a 12-month position, Monday through Friday.
  • Salary and benefits are as established by the Board of Education.
  • A passing score of 70 percent or higher is required on the mandatory practical application test.
  • Flexible hours/Overtime may be necessary.
