Job Summary

Under the direction of the SSS Director and the Dean of Student Services, the SSS Advisor is responsible for the day-to-day facilitation of SSS services which serves 140 individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. This is a grant funded position.

  • Provide support for an assigned caseload of SSS participants in the areas of academic advising, life skills development, student success development, career planning, financial literacy and scholarship assistance, and transfer advising.
  • Assess participant needs and develop individualized student success plans.
  • Refer SSS participants to other service providers on campus such as Academic Success Center, Financial Aid, Registrar, Counseling Services, Disability Services, etc.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of student contacts and assist in updating and maintaining participant files as required by federal regulations.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of project services under the direction of the SSS Coordinator and Director.
  • Recruit eligible participants and obtain documentation to verify program eligibility.
  • Employ best practices and success strategies in creating, implementing, and assessing academic workshops, activities, and events for SSS participants.
  • Keep current with trends and knowledge in the area of student success programs.
  • Advocate for first generation, low income, and students with disabilities.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Commit to being part of a high functioning team that promotes a positive, respectful workplace and welcoming environment for students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.


Physical DemandsNo substantial physical activity is required. The functions of the job are usually performed sitting but may involve some amount of standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. Activities including a variety of physical demands, such as extensive walking outdoors when accompanying participants on college tours and cultural enrichment activities. Additionally, the person should be able to work flexible hours during specific programming events that take place outside of the normal work day, including travel and overnight trip activities. Also, travel utilizing one's own vehicle is necessary at times as well as some overnight travel for staff development. Tasks such as working at a computer keyboard may involve extensive wrist and hand movements. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without a significant risk of injury to themselves or others, or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential functions listed above.

Working ConditionsNoise level is usually moderate and normal for an office environment.

Hazard AssessmentExposure to UV light during cultural enrichment activities and college tours.

Personal Protective EquipmentSunscreen/Sunblock with SPF greater than or equal to 15 that provides both UVA and UVB protection.

Hiring Range - Minimum to Midpoint ($2,929 - 3,173/monthly) Grant Funded

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's Degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Human Services, or a related field required.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. One to three years relevant professional experience working in a TRIO federal program or similar program with low income and first-generation students and students with disabilities.
  2. Experience in providing college academic advising services, financial aid information, and developing full academic assessments for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  3. Can effectively communicate with people from varied backgrounds both individually and in groups.
  4. Experience in planning and executing events to promote cultural awareness and college visits.
  5. Experience related to improving persistence rates for first generation, low income, and students with disabilities.
  6. Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
  7. Ability to exercise discretion and judgement in handling confidential material.
  8. Bilingual preferred.
