Description: POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Director, the Histology Technician is responsible for preparation and staining of specimens. S/He accessions the specimen for billing and maintains the Laboratory, including supplies. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:1. Performs sections.2. Responsible for training other histology technicians as required for covering the Laboratory.3. Maintains section laboratory and equipment.4. Performs gross sectioning, fixing, processing, embedding, cutting, staining, coverslipping and mounting of tissue.5. Produces and maintains accurate records and bills for all work performed. 6. Re-orders stock items as needed.7. Prepares stains and stock solutions, monitors pH and expiration dates.8. Sets up, maintains, operates, and cleans all laboratory equipment and instruments.9. Properly disposes of all chemicals.10. Dates and labels used hazardous waste containers. Prepares hazardous waste for pick up.11. Maintains quality control data for the laboratory.12. May perform specialized tests including special stains, immunoperoxidase, cytospin, centrifuge techniques, as well as preparation of smears.Qualifications: Qualifications: HT ASCP registration is preferred and 1-year of college, with courses in biology and chemistry preferred. 2-years of experience in histology is preferred.
