Domtar Packaging is a new chapter in our 170-year legacy. We are entering the containerboard market with the conversion of our Kingsport, Tennessee, paper mill. This will be our first one hundred percent recycled containerboard manufacturing operation with over 600K Tons of annual capacity. Kingsport is the first of four potential conversions.
The Transportation Manager (TM) needs a strong logistical background in a fast paced, high volume manufacturing environment with excellent customer service and multi-modal transportation experience.
The TM must be able to analyze critical transportation requirements, identify deficiencies, and develop innovative and cost-effective solutions for enhancing Domtars competitiveness at our Kingsport facility.
The position has an integral role in meeting the needs of our customers within the framework of the Packaging business reporting to the Mill Production Manager. This is a full-time, exempt position located at the Domtar Mill facility in Kingsport, TN.

The Transportation Manager position is responsible for all inbound and outbound material movements at the Kingsport Containerboard Mill. This includes the oversight and management of over $50 MM of combined inbound and outbound freight spend inclusive of LTL, TL, IMC, and Rail movements. Responsible for the development and execution of the strategic and operating plan for all scheduling, transportation, and distribution-related activities at this 600,000-ton containerboard facility.
Responsibilities include participation in negotiating rate and service contracts; planning and scheduling of inbound and outbound loads, utilizing rail, truck, and IMC carriers; optimizing utilization of rail equipment between our plant and our supplier facilities and customers; ***overseeing guards and scale house receiving;*** monitoring inventory levels and other requirements at off-site warehouses; coordinating vendor-managed inventory programs; maintaining rail track.
Manage carrier and third-party logistical services relationships for the Kingsport Mill to including the dedicated fleet, shunting service, yard management, and warehouse management providers. Develop operational shipping plan to include load planning and carrier selection for each mode of transportation.
Responsibilities include carrier management, rate negotiations, dispatch, and monitoring, claims processing and review, hazardous materials, designing and producing all departmental reports for mill management, and overseeing activities at any outside warehouse and cross-docking facilities. Oversee and manage spot-rating negotiations and audit requirements.
Work with the Packaging Customer Solutions and Recovered Paper procurement teams to help develop transportation solutions in support of our value proposition.
Analyze the transportation network and make recommendations for improvement - from a cost or service perspective. Manage the performance of our carrier network and make sure each carrier meets the required service and safety levels. Develop and review KPI's for all transportation and logistics providers.
BA or BS in Operations Management/Transportation & Logistics or appropriate experience.
Minimum 3-5 years of domestic supply chain experience in logistics/transportation and/or operations, including full truckload, dedicated operations, and critical delivery situations.
Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to effectively manage people and processes, knowledge of safety regulations and practices.
Demonstrated knowledge of transportation rating and pricing schemes, and methods for all transportation modes.
Thorough knowledge of transportation regulations and understanding compliance requirements in the US.
Supplier management skills, capable problem solver and negotiator.
High level of familiarity with Microsoft Office suite.
Proficient with TMS software suites e.g. Princeton TMX Desired experience in managing Yard Management process internally or through external providers (Mill Jockey, Trailer pool management) etc
