Position Summary:

The Senior Accountant and Insurance Manager compiles, analyzes, and develops financial reports/forecasts, as well as providing support of day-to-day financial activities. In addition, the position bears responsibility for the development, direction and coordination of the University’s portfolio of insurance programs.

Essential Functions: • Compile and analyze financial data and develop financial reports. Submit reports for review and modification, if necessary.

• Coordinate preparation of schedules and reports required for the University’s annual external audit report.

• Participate in monthly and year-end closing procedures.

• Compile information/data and prepare special reports and analyses as requested. Provide financial data, reports, and analyses to faculty, staff, students, and outside parties to assist with budget management and departments’ record reconciliation.

• Monitor bank account and Municipal Investment Pool (MIP) balances and make transfers between accounts consistent with cash needs to maintain positive cash balances and maximize return on cash and cash equivalents.

• Reconcile operating and payroll bank accounts on a monthly basis, investigating and correcting discrepancies as required.

• Develop and maintain a cash requirements forecasting model to ensure sufficient cash is available to allow the University to meet its financial obligations.

• Monitor and report spending on annual capital and equipment projects. • Responsible for the development, direction, and coordination of the property and casualty insurance programs of the University.

• Independently manage and administer the University’s portfolio of commercial insurance policies, including commercial property, crime, general liability and educator’s legal liability, auto, workers' compensation, umbrella, foreign liability, broadcasters liability, travel accident, athletic injury, student health, pollution liability, and student healthcare (malpractice) liability.

• Execute all aspects of the insurance policy renewal process, including collection of data from individuals/departments for completion of applications for the annual renewal of policies.

• Verify the accuracy of all terms and conditions of renewal policies.

• Collect information for the annual Workers' Compensation audit.

• Maintain property and vehicle schedules and make changes as necessary. Periodically evaluate property and vehicle values and deductibles to ensure consistency with University risk tolerance.

• Recommend and implement insurance structure. Negotiate on behalf of the University for insurance and related services.

• Manage the payment of all insurance premiums including coverage change requests.

• Determine allocation of costs to the General Fund and the Tort Liability Fund.

• Create and administer a premium allocation process to charge auxiliary departments for their portion of insurance premiums.

• Process requests for Certificates of Insurance (COI) from broker. Assist with review of COIs from University vendors to determine if they meet University requirements.

• Review terms of contracts to ensure compliance and consistency with University risk tolerance and policies.

• Manage incident reports and the processing of all property and casualty claims (except work comp claims) with the appropriate insurers. Ensure appropriate recovery of losses is completed. Maintain an internal system of claim and incident report documentation. Administer self-insurance claim funds.

• Collaborate with insurance broker and company loss control reps to schedule periodic visits to the University. Review loss reports and make recommendations on risk management strategies designed to reduce or eliminate future losses.

• Participate on the Safety Committee, Emergency Operations Committee and Athletics Health Committee.

• Serve as insurance and risk management resource for insurance questions and issues, guiding offices throughout the University.

• Identify and monitor developments/trends in operations to assess risk impacts on the University.

• Advise University departments and organizations regarding risk management/mitigation and best practices.

• Perform additional job related duties as assigned or as appropriate.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field. Four years of accounting experience. Effective communication skills. Proven self-motivation and ability to work with minimal direction. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word. Ability to adapt to change and work well in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree (MBA, MAcc or equivalent). Five or more years of related experience. Licensed insurance agent. CPA, CMA, or CIA certification. Knowledge of risk management concepts to include commercial property and casualty insurance, claims, and loss analysis. Higher education accounting, reporting, and analysis experience. Familiarity with GASB accounting and reporting rules (especially for colleges/universities or other business-type activities). Experience using a large integrated ERP system such as Banner, PageUp or PeopleSoft.
