Telecommunications Specialist .

About the Department

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS), an accredited agency, is a full spectrum life safety agency protecting about 500 square miles and over one million people who live and work in Maryland's most populous jurisdiction. MCFRS is a combination system (volunteer/career) in the suburban Washington, D.C. area. MCFRS Responds annually to over 120,000 emergency calls for service and is staffed by nearly 2,700 career and volunteer responders.

What you'll be doing

This position in the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) is responsible for the inventory, programming, distribution, and maintenance of telecommunications technology and equipment in the MCFRS as well as the research and recommendation of new devices and technologies to meet the telecommunications needs of the MCFRS.

The position will monitor device use, approve the monthly payment of bills for service.

The Telecommunications Specialist will work with telecommunications service providers to ensure that the MCFRS is receiving the most economical service packages and devices that meet the needs of the MCFRS, and will recommend fiscal budget allocations for the appropriation of these service.

Who we are seeking: Thorough knowledge of capabilities, capacities, limits and operating characteristics of telephone equipment and cabling, including telephone switching equipment and call sequencers. Thorough knowledge of voice message and telecommunication systems, system performance capabilities, and evaluative techniques used to determine telephone and telecommunication service requirements. PBX telephone switching equipment, call sequencers, and voice mail systems and other peripheral equipment; and basic knowledge of the IBM cabling system for local area networks. Knowledge of Federal, and ability to acquire knowledge of State and County laws, rules and regulations governing activities of the County Government's telephone systems. Ability to gather, to assemble, to analyze, and to evaluate technical information on telephone and other telecommunication systems, and to formulate/obtain solutions to difficult system problems. Ability to operate personal computer to input changes to telecommunication system databases Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County and vendor staff. The position will report to the Technology Section Chief of the MCFRS.

Additional Information: This position requires a valid driver's license and the ability to attend meetings or perform work at locations outside the office. To ensure a workplace that is compliant with federal, state and county laws, the incumbent is responsible for completing mandatory trainings within the first three to six months of employment and additional training, as required. Selected candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal background check and Medical History Review that includes a drug and alcohol screening. Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

Three (3) years' experience in a telecommunications field performing work related to administering a Private Branch Exchange (PBX), telephone system needs analysis and installation planning, and coordinating maintenance/operation of voice communication systems.

Education:

Graduation from high school or High School Certificate completion recognized in the State of Maryland.

Equivalency:

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

License:

Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence.

Physical Ability:

Work is performed primarily in an office environment and involves no significant safety hazards.No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following: Experience will cellular communications systems including device programming and maintenance. Experience and proficiency working with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access. Experience with PBX system programming and maintenance.
