Job Description

We are seeking a Deputy Project Managerbased in Carlsbad, New Mexico to support the management and operations of the Waste Isolation Pilot Project (WIPP) in New Mexico. The nation's only operating deep geologic repository for defense-related transuranic waste, WIPP is a critical link in the U.S (ULSD SPEC) mission to properly dispose of legacy waste from nuclear weapons production and nuclear defense activities.

The Deputy Project Manager will report to the Capital Assets Manager, responsible for managing capital asset projects to recover baseline schedules. Lead infrastructure planning, drive safety, quality, continuous improvement and cost and schedule efficiency. Accountable for delivery of line-item capital asset, infrastructure, and general projects for line-item capital projects, safety significant confinement ventilation system project, utility shaft project, hoisting capability project, infrastructure projects, general plant projects, major items of equipment, and major maintenance and repair projects.

Duties & Responsibilities include:
  • The project manager is responsible for overall project execution of its projects ensuring that the project is delivered within the standards of safety, quality, contract requirements.
  • Ensures all team members have a strong understanding of project safety requirements, construction scope, schedule, quality and budget requirements.
  • Provides leadership for achieving project success through guiding and motivating the project team to do the right things for success.
  • Implements project procedures in the execution of the project.
  • Helps drive the company environmental health and safety programs at the project level, reinforcing a safety-oriented approach to work.
  • Monitor the technical requirements of the work, including quality control/assurance.
  • Monitor implementation of the contractor's quality program(s).
  • Set clear expectations and consequences utilizing the performance-based leadership model.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities, skill in supervision. Leads by example.
  • Review project execution strategies and engineering plans.
  • Participate in and concur with the development of project engineering budgets.
  • Provide technical / expert support to project teams and ensure technical quality.
  • Provide active oversight of project work; nurture a culture of creativity, innovation, empowerment, and TIC reduction.
  • Directs construction engineering activities of the assigned construction engineering staff.
  • Coordinates subcontract activities to ensure material, equipment and workmanship comply with design plans and specifications.
  • Implements controls over variables affecting job progress to ensure engineering and procurement provide timely delivery of drawings, materials and equipment and that other corporate service department are fully utilized.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor Degree in Engineering.
  • Licensed Engineer is mandatory.
  • A strong technical background with a minimum of 10-15 years of experience in project and engineering management.
  • Previous experience in all stages of the EPC/EPCM project execution life cycle, from pre-feasibility to construction.
  • Proven experience in underground shaft mining and hoist upgrades.
  • Knowledge and experience in baseline development and implementation including scope definition, roles and responsibilities, estimates and resource loaded schedules, progress and performance curves and metrics, reports and action items tracking.
  • Soft rock, continuous mining experience preferred - salt, potash, trona, and coal considered.
  • Prior experience managing multi-disciplined engineering groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States.
