Position Type: Maintenance/Custodial/Custodian Date Posted: 7/10/2024 Location: Lake Bluff School District 65 Date Available: 08/01/2022 JOB TITLE: CUSTODIAN LOCATION: Lake Bluff District Office and/or School Buildings CHARACTERISTICS: Classified employee, 12-month position REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Facilities Manager EVALUATION: Evaluated yearly by the Facilitied Manager, with input from the Building Principal, in accordance with the Board of Education Policy on Evaluation of Personnel. OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION To facilitate the educational processes of the District by effectively, efficiently and confidentially performing cleaning, maintenance, and security tasks associated with the District Office and/or school buildings. RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Adheres to all District policies, safety practices, and regulations relating to areas of responsibilities. Daily monitoring of electronic work orders. Enters job details/labor as completed. Set-up and break-down of equipment and clean-up for events and before/after school activities; provide supervision during events as requested. Daily morning and afternoon crossing guard duties. Must wear all safety gear provided by the District at all times. Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, stairwells and play areas, neat and clean at all times. Monitor, Clean, Sanitize common areas and touch points during occupancy. Washes or scrubs walls, floors, ceilings, furniture, fixtures, windows, and mirrors using hand or power equipment. Sweeps and dusts. Cleans corridors during the day when conditions require it. Maintains interior and exterior surfaces; Prepares surfaces and applies paint, varnish, wax, or polish. Restocks disposable items. Maintains an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel on hand, and orders replacements through the Maintenance Department so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder his/her duties. Performs minor maintenance tasks (changes light bulbs, replaces ceiling tiles and chairs glides, unclogs toilets and drains, resets breakers, etc.) while notifying Maintenance Supervisor of higher-level maintenance needs. Identifies and uses, with skill, all types of custodial equipment and tools. Makes minor repairs of equipment and performs preventative maintenance on assigned equipment (cleans/changes mop heads, changes vacuum bags, washes out mop bucket, etc.) Maintains vehicle fleet. Monitor and perform routine safety inspections, clean interior/exterior, refuel. Handles emergency situations, including blood and body fluid spills; false fire alarms; locked doors; broken glass; jammed or broken equipment; vandalism, etc. Performs seasonal grounds work including mowing, edging, shrub/tree trimming, mulching, fertilizing, weeding, leaf removal and planting. During winter months shovels, plows, and/or salts walks, driveways, parking areas and steps, as appropriate. Maintains student lockers; performs preventative maintenance, repairs and changes locker combinations. Lifts, stacks, stores and moves all types of supplies, equipment, and furniture between rooms and/or buildings. Moves furniture or equipment, supplies, or large packages as requested by school personnel within the building as required for various activities and as directed by the Principal. Complies with District procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, recycling and compost. Monitor and maintain milk inventory for lunchroom. Performs monthly inspections of emergency lighting and exit signs, fire extinguishers, fencing, and playgrounds. Assist in maintaining the general security of the building. Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are locked and are working properly. Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each day (when applicable) and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off. Reports any damage to school property or major repairs needed immediately to the Principal or Maintenance Supervisor. Works cooperatively with students, parents, staff, and community members to project a positive, service-oriented demeanor. ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Attends staff meetings as required. Maintains professional competence through participation in District provided in-service activities and/or self-selected professional growth activities related to job responsibilities. Performs other duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS High School diploma. Experience as a custodian in a school setting or related environment preferred. Ability to speak, read, and write in English. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences, including students, parents and staff. Basic computer skills: work order systems, time keeping systems, calendar and email. Valid First Aid/CPR cards, blood borne pathogen and Epipen training preferred. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Moderate to extensive degree of physical stamina and frequent lifting up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds. Ability to lift furniture, desks, shelving, staging and cleaning supplies and equipment. Frequent and prolonged standing, walking and bending. Ability to climb ladders, and stretch and bend to perform such duties as cleaning and general maintenance. Ability to move freely around the school building and grounds. Exposure to weather conditions. Exposure to chemicals, dirt, dust, and paint. Exposure to noise and activity levels associated with school life. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Salary to be determined yearly.
