Description
The Donor Eligibility Specialist (DES) is responsible for the determination of eligibility of ocular tissue and for the timely release of donor charts. The DES will support the Manager of Eye Bank with facilitating medical review training and ensuring that quality review of donor records are performed in accordance to regulations, standards, and established Nevada Donor Network (NDN) policies and done in a timely manner. The DES is responsible for supporting the Quality Management System and participating in various aspects of regulatory compliance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Essential Functions Statement(s):
- Performs ocular donor eligibility determination under the direction of the Eye Bank Medical Director. Consults with Eye Bank Medical Director, and Manager of Eye Bank as needed for the disposition and release donor charts in a timely manner.
- Participates in the continuous training as it pertains to ocular donor eligibility requirements. Responsible for final review of ocular donor charts to ensure compliance with FDA and EBAA Medical Standards.
- Works closely with the Manager of Eye Bank and Director/Manager of Quality and Regulatory Affairs to identify opportunities for improvement for the development of efficiencies to expedite release of donor charts and distribution of tissue. Acts as liaison between Ocular Services and Quality & Regulatory Affairs Departments.
- Assists with initiating and conducting investigations and follow-up with surgeons for reported adverse reactions and/or ocular complaints. Responsible for ensuring all reports are adequately closed and warranted corrective actions are completed. Assists with ocular related complaints, deviations, or potential adverse event reporting activities.
- Supports and participates in scheduled and unscheduled regulatory and accrediting agency audits including the EBAA and FDA.
- Responsible for keeping current with NDN policies, EBAA medical standards and FDA regulatory changes that affect Ocular Services, ocular donor eligibility and all job responsibilities.
- Maintain a working knowledge of ocular tissue evaluation, processing, and distribution methods.

SKILLS & ABILITIES
Education: Bachelor's Degree in biological science or related field preferred or equivalent experience.
Experience: Minimum four (4) years of experience with Eye Bank, Tissue Bank, or OPO quality systems strongly preferred. Must possess excellent working knowledge of medical terminology.
Computer Skills: Working knowledge of computers and excellent data entry skills required. Knowledge of electronic donor record system, such as iTransplant strongly desired.
Certificates & Licenses: CEBT certification preferred. Obtain medical director designation within 1 year of employment
