Description

The GIS technician will work in the division of Science and Resource Management at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and will complete GIS projects in support of natural and cultural resources projects. Specifically, the technician will complete spatial data analyses, maintain geospatial databases, produce maps, and develop new data collection workflows. These projects will support the NPS mission of protecting and preserving natural and cultural resources.

Job Tasks include:
  • Assist park staff in GIS support for various projects, including data management activities, data collection, and GIS workflows,
  • Use of NPS data standards to input and maintain attribute-level data.
  • Incorporation of Geographic Information System ESRI technology of ArcGIS Pro 3.2 or newer into various projects
  • Collecting, attributing, editing, plotting, and analyzing data associated with ongoing projects.
  • Create, update and edit metadata records for GIS projects. Reads and understands metadata to determine appropriate use.
  • Collects geospatial data using tablets and handheld GPS devices, and incorporates high accuracy GPS receiving technology
  • Uses GIS software and cartographic tools to create maps, following appropriate standards, including use of project map templates.
  • Will work on projects to manage natural and cultural resources, including a specific project to document and track instances of vandalism across the park and the history of vandalism and graffiti remediation and planning activities.
  • Create SOPs, tutorials, and additional support documentation to help current and future staff use a prescribed workflow to continue to document vandalism and remediation and planning activities.
  • Create maps (digital and hardcopy) and digital forms for data collection and web maps to help staff with managing park resources, primarily for use in the ESRI ArcGIS Online environment, to allow staff to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects.
  • Must follow all NPS computer use policies, and NPS policies for managing and storing geospatial data and sensitive cultural resources data.
  • A Department of the Interior background check is required.
  • Work will include sedentary work at a computer, primarily completing GIS-related tasks, and field work for multiple days at a time. Field work will take place by vehicle and/or boat, and will include camping or backpacking. Technician must be able to complete moderate to strenuous activities, including to hike on rough terrain carrying a pack of up to 35lb for up to 8 miles
Compensation:
  • Appointment is for 480 hours of work, and may be part-time or full-time.
  • Wage of $24/hour
  • Housing: Agency housing is available to rent near Page, AZ. Available housing is a room in a shared residential house with housemates. Rent is the responsibility of the participant, and includes utilities. Agency housing does not include internet.
Qualifications
  • Completed an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a field related to natural or cultural resources, or a current student in an accredited degree program, studying a related field (GIS, archeology, geography, history, biology, environmental sciences, cartography, or similar).
  • Completion of at least 15 semester hours of coursework in GIS training, or demonstrated experience in an equivalent level of work.
  • Interest in increasing skills and understanding managing and protecting natural and cultural resources.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in use of ArcGIS PRO 3.2x or newer in the following tasks.
    • Read, interpret, edit, and create metadata.
    • Create a map using a template.
    • Collect data using a variety of devices and software (handheld GPS, Survey123, Field Collector) and import data into ArcGIS PRO environment.
    • Creating and editing schemas and domains in a geodatabase.
    • Editing attributes in a geodatabase.
  • Experience using ArcGIS Online resources.
  • Ability to work both independently and part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Experience with data entry and QA/QC procedures.
  • Ability to communicate both in writing and verbally to a variety of audiences, including peers, supervisors, park managers, and members of the public.
  • Ability to camp, hike, and work in the outdoors safely.
