POSITION SUMMARY:

Under minimal supervision, according to established policies and professional standards, performs or oversees the performance of all phases of outpatient pharmacy services. Consults with and advises medical and nursing staff, as well as patients, regarding information on medications, including dosing and monitoring drug therapy, drug incompatibilities, warning and contraindications. Dispenses medications and other pharmaceutical supplies using appropriate procedures to fill prescriptions issued by qualified prescribers. Provides supervision of pharmacy technicians and oversees regular work routine involving interpretation of physician's orders and dispensing of medication to individual patients.

JOB SPECIFIC ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Reviews, interprets and fills orders generated by qualified prescribers.
a. Consults patient drug profile for allergies or drug interactions using software functions.
b. Ensures that proper type and dosage of drug is dispensed.
c. Ensures order is complete and that route of administration is appropriate.
2. Contact physician office, patient and/or insurance company when necessary to complete prescription safely and accurately.
3. Regularly supervises the work of technicians as they assist in providing the filling, labels and dispensing of orders. Certifies by initial the complete inspection of all prescription medications filled and dispensed.
4. Monitors pharmacy drug inventory on a monthly basis in order to check expiration and supply levels. Disposes of unused and/or contaminated drugs/solutions.
5. Maintains records of controlled substances, inventory and distribution as required by state and federal law.
6. Counsels patients on proper use of medication and possible side effects when requested by patient or physician. Answers questions regarding dosage, compatibility, etc.
7. Interacts professionally and effectively with team members, customers, physicians and their staff to ensure a collaborative plan of services and demonstrates the ability to maintain a workflow that maximizes the quality of customer service. Keeps supervisors and employees informed about issues.
8. Answer telephone efficiently and courteously by receiving and relaying incoming, outgoing and interdepartmental calls.
9. Participates in staff meetings for the purpose of disseminating information and monitoring colleague needs, concerns and suggestions.
10. Remains current in developments in pharmacy and healthcare through continuing education, review of professional literature, participation in professional organizations and communications with peers in other organizations and on staff.
11. Complies with all state and federal laws and regulations. As well as FDA mandates and regulations. As well as FDA mandates and manufacturer restrictions.

12. Reports and documents any quality related events in VOICE and to the FDA, when applicable.
13. Explores ways in which to expand relationships and foster growth within the department, Mercy Health Muskegon and the community, especially in the areas of pharmaceutical and patient care.
14. Actively promotes and participates in various task forces, teams or committees in the department or for the hospital at large. Participates in various events representing the organization to the community.
15. Stewards the organization's resources effectively in terms of process improvements, medication costs and supply expenses.
16. Performs all other duties as assigned.

RELATED FUNCTIONS
1. Completes comprehensive medication reviews with patients and assists in other medication therapy management as needed.
2. Cleans assigned area and equipment.
3. For specialty pharmacists only, a minimum of 10% of job duties must be devoted to quality management.
SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
1. Analytical ability to identify possible drug interactions, calculate dosage, etc. Ability to interpret physicians' orders and to use formulas and reference texts as necessary. An aptitude for detail with the ability to work within an area that is very quality control/cost conscious.
2. Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with patients and/or patients' medical care team.
3. Articulates and demonstrates commitment to the philosophy, values, mission and vision of Trinity Health.
4. Basic typing and keyboard skills.
5. Maintains licensure.
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSURE
1. Completion of Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy or Doctorate in Pharmacy.
2. Prior retail pharmacy experience preferred.
3. Licensed by the State of Michigan to practice pharmacy and dispense controlled substances.
4. Completion of basic life support certification and immunization certification.
WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Primarily involves prolonged periods of time standing, but also bending, crouching, sitting, squatting and reading. Also employs a wide range of physical activities.
2. Occasionally involves lifting, carrying and/or pushing/pulling a wide range of weight up to 30 pounds unassisted, primarily weights up to 20 pounds.
3. Is very frequently performing detailed tasks being subject to interruptions and evolving and changing work priorities.
