Job Description:

POSITION: Personal Computer/Communications Technician

DEPARTMENT: Information System Services

WORK SCHEDULE: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., M-F

STATUS: Full-time

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Incumbent serves as Personal Computer/Communications Technician for Information System Services, responsible for maintaining County personal computers, all peripheral devices and communications equipment.

DUTIES:

Receives and responds to calls for assistance with telephones and personal computer hardware and software, including performing diagnostics, identifying problems, making minor repairs, or contacting appropriate vendors for service as needed. Monitors work of service vendors to ensure proper, timely completion of repairs.

Trains users regarding personal computer operation and software applications, and assists users as requested.

Installs, configures, and maintains hardware throughout County organization, including various hardware components, such as memory chips and device cables, data cabling, and network connectivity. Installs software upgrades as needed.

Installs, configures, and maintains all peripheral devices throughout County organization, including scanners, printers, and copiers. Installs software upgrades as needed.

Configures and maintains voice mail and telephone system, including installing/moving telephones and jacks, programming line/feature changes, ordering phones and cables, wiring closet connections, and maintaining related database. Monitors and maintains voice and data cabling.

Implements and installs personal computer replacements annually, according to established schedule.

Investigates hardware and software alternatives, and makes appropriate recommendations to supervisor.

Assists Systems Administrator and periodically serves as backup to same.

Periodically attends job-related conferences/training.

Performs related duties as assigned.

I. JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Associate Degree in computer science or related field, and a minimum of two years of increasingly responsible, relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Baccalaureate Degree preferred.

Working knowledge of personal computer systems, and ability to perform routine maintenance, install hardware and software, identify and resolve minor hardware and software problems, and provide training and assistance to users.

Working knowledge of County telephone system, and ability to perform routine maintenance, install new phones, jacks and cabling, wire closet connections, and maintain voice mail.

Working knowledge of peripheral devices and ability to perform routine maintenance, install hardware and software, identify and resolve minor hardware and software problems, and provide training and assistance to users.

Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, and properly operate various standard office equipment, including computer, printer, calculator, copier, fax machine, cable toner/tester, telephone, and related hand tools.

Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, other County personnel, and vendors, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.

Ability to work on several tasks at the same time, often under time pressure, and complete assignments effectively amidst frequent distractions and interruptions.

Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions/directions, and appropriately respond to constructive criticism.

Ability to comply with all employer/department personnel policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information/records according to state requirements.

Ability to work alone and with others in a team environment, and maintain appropriate, respectful interrelationships with co-workers.

Ability to occasionally work extended, weekend and/or evening hours, and occasionally travel out of town for training/seminars, sometimes overnight.

Possession of a valid Indiana driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record.

II. DIFFICULTY OF WORK:

Incumbent's duties are somewhat restricted in scope, but are of substantial intricacy involving several variables and considerations. Incumbent works according to established procedures of the department, exercising independent judgment in identifying and resolving computer problems, and programming/configuring phones.

III. RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent applies standardized practice in resolving computer problems, referring unprecedented situations to supervisor as needed. Incumbent receives indirect or occasional supervision, with work periodically reviewed for technical accuracy and effect on department goals and objectives.

IV. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County personnel and vendors for purposes of exchanging information, and providing training and assistance.

Incumbent reports directly to Applications/Database Manager Administrator.

V. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Incumbent performs duties in a standard office environment involving sitting and walking at will, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying objects weighing more than 50 pounds, working in confined areas and high places, exposure to dust, and occasionally involving close vision, crouching/kneeling, hearing sounds/communication, handling/grasping/fingering objects, speaking clearly, reaching and bending. Incumbent occasionally works extended, weekend and/or evening hours, and occasionally travels out of town for training/seminars, sometimes overnight.
