What you will do The Senior Electrical Engineer for Controls & Power Electronics is responsible for the design, development, validation, and support of active magnetic bearing (AMB) control system hardware. This is a hybrid position based in Salem, VA. Candidates must be commuting distance, or able to relocate.How you will do itDesign, develop, and validate new and updated AMB control system hardware and firmwareDevelop schematicsSelect componentsDesign printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA)Configure and program FPGAsSupport existing AMB hardware designs Manage, through research and validation, critical component substitutions as they become obsolete or otherwise unavailableInvestigate root cause failures for production and fielded components and for complex PCBAs and develop countermeasuresUpdate PCBA designs to reduce cost and improve reliability and performanceSupport PCBA contract manufacturers via technical consultation and documentation updatesServe as technical interface with third parties: PCBA contract manufacturers including automated test development.PCBA design and layout servicesFPGA design servicesWhat you will needRequired Bachelor's degree in a STEM field5+ years embedded control system hardware development experienceDevelopment of application-optimized real-time closed-loop control systemsCritical component selection and high-speed interface design such as microprocessor, DSP, FPGA, memory devices, serial communications (USB, Ethernet), and peripheral interfacesData converter optimization (D/A, A/D)Distributed power supply topologiesDevice-to-device serial interfaces (SPI, I2C, RS485, etc.)PWM control theoryHigh-speed signal and EMC (Electro-Magnetic Compatibility) PCBA layout considerationsThermal management designFamiliarity with advanced electronic diagnostic and laboratory equipmentProgramming & diagnostic tools (FPGA, JTAG emulators)Troubleshooting experiencePreferredAdditional education such as MS in Computer, Electronics, or Electrical EngineeringEmbedded control system software developmentCustom SoM (System on Module) specificationHigh-speed clock domain managementBrushless motor commutation theoryEddy current position sensor technology and interfaceSoC (System on Chip) specifications (e.g., thermal limits) & architecture (e.g., memory controller design, system buses, cache control, processor interlocks, etc.)Experience with Electro-mechanical systems and rotating machineryJohnson Controls International plc. is an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, protected veteran status, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity, status as a qualified individual with a disability or any other characteristic protected by law.
