Job Summary:

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) administers routine health care & nursing services to Residents, maintains a suitable environment for Residents & visitors, and performs related duties as required.

Description:

Under the supervision of the DON, the Assistant Director of Nursing/Unit Coordinator and/or the Charge Nurse, the Certified Nursing Assistant is responsible for assisting the professional staff by performing various Resident care activities & related nonprofessional services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of Residents. CNAs are responsible for the delivery of Resident care (e.g., bathing, personal grooming, feeding) as well as assisting Residents with other Activities of Daily Living (e.g., transferring, dressing, toileting). The CNA strives to provide the highest degree of quality Resident care in accordance with State & Federal regulations, Facility policies & procedures, and Resident wishes/directives. This position helps to assure that the total needs of the Residents are met.

Qualifications:

A. Graduate of an approved program for Certified Nursing Assistants and maintain certification in good standing in the state where work will be performed.

B. Current CPR certification or ability to obtain CPR certification within 90 days of date of hire.

C. Satisfactory OIG exclusions and background check.

D. Satisfactory personal & professional references.

Required Personal Skills & Traits:

A. Awareness of & interest in the welfare of geriatric Residents.

B. Ability & willingness to maintain confidentiality.

C. A firm desire to perform the job & a demonstrated willingness to learn.

D. Ability to understand/fully comprehend the English language & communicate effectively with Residents, Resident family members, & staff in a one-on-one setting or a group.

Essential Job Functions:

1. Direct Care & Care Supervision

a. Actively participate in Resident admission and discharge process.

b. Promptly answer call lights to respond to Residents needs.

c. Provide fresh drinking water in each Resident room, as per Facility schedule and/or per Resident request.

d. Position call lights so they are within reach of Residents.

e. Dress & undress Residents as appropriate & in accordance with Resident preferences.

f. Allow Resident to perform as much of choosing of clothing, dressing, bathing & self-care as reasonable to maintain personal hygiene, safety, & dignity.

g. Assist with Resident bathing, if no Bath/Shower Aide is assigned.

i. Is flexible in bath schedules to accommodate Resident choices as much as possible.

ii. Adjusts schedules to accommodate Resident activities, appointments, & meals, as directed by Charge Nurse.

iii. Dependent on Resident level of needed assistance.

iv. Transport fully dressed Resident to shower room.

v. Shave men and women as needed for facial hair, underarm hair, and leg hair.

vi. Provide shampooing.

vii. Provide nail care for non-diabetic Residents, to include trimming fingernails & toenails.

viii. Apply deodorant & other personal toiletries.

ix. Perform body assessment.

x. Towel dry or blow dry hair and comb/brush appropriately.

xi. Apply all support appliances when dressing Resident, including braces, hand roles, heel protectors,

and geri-sleeves as ordered for CNA application.

xii. Transport fully dressed Resident back to room or ancillary area.

h. Assist Residents with positioning.

i. Turn & reposition bedfast Residents, alone or with assistance, using proper techniques & in accordance with Facility protocol.

ii. Reseat, lift or otherwise move wheelchair-bound Residents to prevent falls from chair & skin breakdown, to maintain Resident comfort, & to facilitate Resident engagement in surroundings & participation in activities.

i. Observe Residents skin & report abnormalities to Charge Nurse.

j. Assist with bowel/bladder function (e.g., assisting to restroom in a timely manner when Resident requests, maintain toileting schedule for any Resident with toileting care plan, bed pans, changing of diapers/pads).

k. Obtain urine and/or stool specimens as ordered by physician/directed by Charge Nurse.

l. Transport Residents or assist Resident to walk.

m. Transfer Residents from one place to another using proper techniques.

n. Serve & collect food trays and otherwise assist with mealtime, allowing Residents ample time to eat according to their cognitive function.

i. Open condiment packets.

ii. Remove lids.

iii. Assist with seasoning.

iv. Assist with feeding, as per Resident care plan.

v. Observe Residents for safety of chewing/swallowing & report any issues to Charge Nurse.

o. Keep Residents beds clean, dry & tidy making beds & changing linens per Facility protocol.

p. Take & record temperature, weight, blood pressure, pulse/respiration rates, and food/fluid intake and output, and other data as directed.

q. Performs frequent rounds according to Facility protocol.

r. Assist with Resident activities as requested.

s. When no Activity Programs are in planned/in process, assist with finding meaningful activity for the Resident.

t. Performs CNA duties as required & assigned by the Charge nurse, Assistant Director of Nursing and/or Director of Nursing.

2. Care Administration & Documentation

a. Displays job competencies consistently.

b. Bathing/Showering

i. Gather supplies each day prior to beginning showers (e.g., soaps, lotions, towels, wash clothes).

ii. Keep work area clean & sanitized between Residents & upon completion of all showers.

iii. Keep work area free of clutter or obstacles that would prevent safe transfer of Residents.

iv. Keep floors dry.

v. Completes shower sheets according to Facility policy.

c. Report to Charge Nurse any changes in Resident condition, appearance, behavior, skin integrity, & movement.

d. Chart Resident vital signs & weight according to Facility policy/procedure.

e. Document Resident walking or other activities as directed and according to Facility policy/procedure.

3. Contribute to Facility efforts to maintain &/or improve quality of care through the following:

a. Maintain confidentiality & personal dignity of Residents at all times.

b. Attend and actively participate in Facility meetings, such as staff meetings, in-services, & designated committee meetings.

c. Promote quality assurance.

d. Immediately report to the Administrator or DON any suspicions of Abuse, Neglect or Misappropriation of Resident property.

e. Maintain conformity to Federal and State Regulations for Long Term Care Facilities.

f. Review and adhere to all Facility Policy and Procedures.

g. Maintain conformity to Facility Standards as required.

h. Promote public relations.

4. Miscellaneous

a. Assist in the evacuation of Residents in emergency situations.

b. Maintain a good intra-personal relationship with Residents, staff & visitors.

c. Perform other duties as assigned by the Charge Nurse, Assistant Director of Nursing, and/or Director of Nursing.

d. Comply with Certified Nursing Assistant job description when functioning as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

e. Function only within the scope of practice in which this position is certified to function.

f. Report attendance & tardy incidents in accordance with Facility policy & procedure.

g. Comply with uniform/attire (which includes name tag, appropriate shoes) and other requirements in accordance with policies and procedures of the Facility.

h. The CDC guidelines say that health care personnel should not wear artificial nails and should keep natural nails less than one quarter inch.
