Maintenance Mechanic This position is located at the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York. Responsibilities include the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, and related fixtures and utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, air conditioning, cement work, painting, and other related trades. Conducts and is responsible for the maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of masonry structures of brick, block, stone, firebrick, and similar materials; the construction and repair of cement and concrete surfaces and structures; the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical wiring systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment in industrial, institutional, office, and residential buildings, and requires knowledge and application of electrical principles, materials, and safety standards; constructing, altering, maintaining, and repairing buildings, structures, partitions, panels, tool cabinets, bookcases, work benches, and other items using wood, wood substitutes, and composite building materials, and requires knowledge of construction and repair techniques; the type, grade, and working characteristics of wood and wood substitute materials such as strengths and applications; installation, modification, and repair of utility, supply, and disposal systems, fixtures, fittings, and equipment such as sewage, water, irrigation, gas, and oil lines, compressed air, and vacuum systems, water closets, water heaters, hydrants, valves, and industrial pumps; and applying coating materials (for example, paint, varnish, lacquer, shellac, epoxy resin, and Teflon) on wood, metal, glass, synthetic, concrete, and other surfaces. This coating work is done with brushes, rollers, spray guns, and other related methods and techniques, and is performed on the insides and outsides of buildings, mobile equipment, fittings, furnishings, machinery, and other surfaces. Incumbent must understand the operation and use of all tools, both hand and power operated, which are relevant to completion of the work activities assigned. Work schedule: Required to work Monday through Friday, 7:45 am to 4:15 pm to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work. Candidates must demonstrate the potential to perform a broad range of building and maintenance trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, painting, masonry, pest control, asphalt repairs, and related tasks. This includes conducting repair and preventive maintenance of irrigation systems, buildings, structures, facilities, and utilities using hand and power tools. Applicants should show proficiency in at least two of these trades through work, training, or other relevant activities. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Required to perform heavy lifting up to 90 pounds; continually required to stand while working and must frequently climb ladders and scaffolds; make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places, requires incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Working Conditions: The work is performed both inside and outside under a variety of weather conditions when outside; environment includes dust, dirt, high noise levels, vibrations, jolts, heights, fumes, and hazards associated with operating power tools and equipment; occasionally exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, the possibility of scrapes, cuts, bruises, and contusions. Incumbent may be required to work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics which may be dusty and dirty; work may require use protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, and gloves.
