Position Summary: Under the general supervision of the Underwriting Manager, the Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and determining the eligibility of loan applications. Responsibilities include analyzing and verifying loan applications, evaluating risks, and making loan eligibility decisions. The Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for exercising sound judgment based on detailed analysis and ensuring all documentation is in compliance with the relevant regulations.

Primary Duties

  • Comply with industry-related regulations, requirements and state/federal laws as applicable to the job duties of this position.
  • Authorizing and underwriting loans.
  • Reviewing and verifying loan applications and supporting documentation.
  • Analyzing loan risk and requesting additional information as necessary.
  • Preparing reports on assessment findings.
  • Making loan eligibility decisions and approving or rejecting applications.
  • Reviewing and specifying loan conditions as necessary.
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Ensuring compliance with company policies and guidelines.
  • Documenting and effectively communicating reasons for the approval/rejection of loans.
  • Returning applications with additional documentation to the loan officer for review.
  • Proficient understanding of Encompass and Encompass closing docs.
  • Experienced with FNMA DU/AUS, FHA, VA, USDA and investor guidelines.
  • Regular and sustained attendance.
  • Maintain compliance with and adhere to all state and federal regulations and bank policies and procedures, including, but not limited to Bank Secrecy Act, FACT ACT, Community Reinvestment Act, and EEO/AA/Fair Employment Practices.
Minimum Educational & Experience Requirements
  • High School diploma required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in business, banking, or finance preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in mortgage loan underwriting.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Highly organized and able to prioritize.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Detail-oriented with strong data analysis skills.
  • High mathematical aptitude.
  • Good working knowledge of mortgage loan processing and relevant legal regulations.

Physical Demands
