Description

Potomac State College (WVU Keyser), part of the West Virginia University system of campuses, located in Keyser, WV is seeking applications for a Director of Development.

About the Opportunity

Reporting directly to the Campus President of Potomac State College and working closely with the WVU Foundation, you will manage all aspects of the WVU Potomac State College development program, including managing a comprehensive major gift program to generate current gift revenue from individuals, corporations, and foundations, and deferred gift revenue from individuals. Your primary responsibility is discovery, prospect identification, building relationships and advancing gifts at the $10,000 + level with an emphasis of gifts at the major gifts level at $50,000 + , with a portfolio of assigned prospects, coordinating with the WVU Foundation's Annual Giving program on Potomac State College's annual giving plan, donor stewardship and coordinating prospect/donor visits to campus.

What you'll do:
  • Manage all aspects of WVU Potomac State College development program, including managing a comprehensive major gift program to generate current gift revenue from individuals, corporations, and foundations, deferred gift revenue from individuals, annual giving programming and stewardship.
  • Execute qualifying discussions to define philanthropic aspirations of individuals, corporations, and foundations identified by the WVU Foundation Prospect Discovery and Strategy program at the leadership annual giving level, a capacity of $10,000 + with an emphasis on gifts at $50k +.
  • Working with WVU Potomac State College faculty, staff, and volunteers, and the appropriate personnel of the WVU Foundation, identify priorities for private support consistent with specific resource requirements of the College, establish and maintain operational goals, and define budgetary requirements for each development program activity.
  • Coordinate with Donor Relations and appropriate fundraising colleagues to develop and execute personalized stewardship plans for select donors and prospects.
  • Coordinate all development efforts with the WVU Foundation and comply with all WVU Foundation reporting and accountability standards.
  • Maintain a comprehensive working knowledge of WVU Potomac State College, including its mission and history, and current priorities assuring effective representation of all aspects of the College and its opportunities and priorities for private support.
  • Manage a portfolio of major gift donors and prospects, as defined by working with the WVU Foundation (currently $50,000+), from initial identification through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Plan, schedule, and complete frequent travel, including overnight, to make contact with prospects and donors in completion of portfolio management. Travel will be conducted in West Virginia, the surrounding region, and some national travel, as necessary while also leveraging and collaborating with the Institutional Giving gift officers at the WVU Foundation to do discovery, identification, cultivation, and solicitation of prospects and donors in supporting Potomac State University.
  • Plan, organize, and implement development strategies for all special or capital projects in coordination as appropriate.
  • Coordinating with Prospect Development and Strategy, suggest strategy meetings on multi-interest prospects with fundraising colleagues across the institution at WVU Foundation to keep gift discussions moving forward in a donor centric fashion.
  • Initiate and facilitate collegial relationships and open communications with other WVU Foundation and University development staff, and other University and WVU Potomac State College constituents in advancing the mission of the College.
  • Complete other duties as may be assigned from time-to-time by the Campus President or designees in advancement of the WVU Potomac State College development mission.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of progressive experience, preferably in development, advancement, sales, client relations with a history of successful major and/or planned gift solicitations or the equivalent, relevant experience in the financial or for-profit industry.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with greater experience in development; experience in higher education; experience at a comprehensive university; and sales environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to plan projects and carry them to completion
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with potential donors, Foundation executives, University administrators, faculty and staff
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to write successful development and research proposals
  • Demonstrated success in soliciting and obtaining major gifts.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of planned giving vehicles and methods.
  • The position requires the ability to travel frequently and undertake regular weekend and evening work.
