Job Description - Histology Technologist (3296599) POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Director, the Senior Frozen Section Technician is responsible for the preparation and staining of the frozen section specimens. S/He accessions the specimen for billing and maintains the Laboratory, including supplies. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Performs frozen sections. Responsible for training other histotechnologist as required to cover the Laboratory. Maintains frozen section laboratory and equipment. Performs gross sectioning, fixing, processing, embedding, cutting, staining, coverslipping, and mounting of tissue. Produces and maintains accurate records and bills for all work performed. Re-orders stock items as needed. Prepares stains and stock solutions and monitors pH and expiration dates. Sets up, maintains, operates, and cleans all laboratory equipment and instruments. Properly disposes of all chemicals. Dates and labels used hazardous waste containers.Prepares hazardous waste for pick up. Maintains quality control data for the laboratory. May perform specialized tests including special stains, immunoperoxidase, cytospin, centrifuge techniques, as well as preparation of smears. Other duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: HT ASCP or HLT ASCP Registration preferred and 1 year of college, with courses in biology and chemistry preferred.Two years experience in frozen section preparation.Two years experience in a histology laboratory.Experience cutting paraffin-embedded tissue and special staining techniques, including immunoperoxidase. WORKING CONDITIONS: Long periods of sitting while preparing sections; normal clinical laboratory environment. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Long periods of sitting.
