JOB SUMMARY AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

JOB SUMMARY

This position performs responsible semiskilled work locating and reading electric and water meters; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Meter Technician II.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is light work requiring the exertion of 20 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending terrain, ladders, stairs, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Hearing: Required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at the knee to come to a rest on the knee or knees.
  • Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Pushing: Using the upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Vocal Communication: Required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Visual Acuity: Required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Locates and reads electric and water meters on assigned routes and records consumption in hand held computer.
  • Keeps records of meters read and reports meters not accessible for reading.
  • Checks to see that meters are correctly installed and functioning properly, and reports defects and leaks.
  • Conducts re-reads and reseals meters as directed.
  • Reports meter tampering as soon as possible.
  • Responds to customer inquiries and instructs customers in the proper reading of meters.
  • Processes service orders and disconnects/reconnects service as needed.
  • Obtains special readings and assists with office work as required.

  • Performs related tasks as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent. One year of experience reading electric, water, or gas meters preferred.

Special Qualifications:

A driver's license valid in the State of Florida.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Some knowledge of the methods and procedures involved in the reading of meters and recording consumption.
  • General knowledge of the geography and street locations within service area.
  • Ability to use an automated consumption recording device.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
  • Ability to walk for continuous periods under varying climatic conditions.
  • Ability to perform simple math calculations.
