The Infrastructure and Networking Innovation Center within MITRE Labs drives innovative solutions in the technical areas such as enterprise networks, 5G/xG, cloud and containerization engineering, enterprise service automation and intelligent mission aware networking. The innovation center works across national security sector, public sector and other mission partners to include industry, academia and other federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs). The Director of Infrastructure and Networking Innovation Center is responsible for cohering and leading this organization in creating innovative and disruptive solutions in the public interest, while cultivating world-class technical capabilities and workforce. Strategic leadership, creativity, and the flexibility to work across evolving and diverse problem sets are a must.

The director is responsible for a range of technical, business, and talent development activities. Technical capabilities and expertise include enterprise networking, enterprise network and cloud security, network modeling and analysis, 5G/6G/xG, tactical networking, cloud and containerization technology, service management and service automation. These technical capabilities are applied across the entire range of existing MITRE sponsors and should create opportunities to address broader national challenges through capability and platform development. The Innovation Center translates and integrates lessons learned across multiple application domains and sponsors to continually learn and advance MITRE's impact. The division encompasses approximately 200 employees in McLean, Virginia; Bedford, Massachusetts; and several other sites across the United States that support a diverse work program.

Additionally, the Director of Infrastructure and Networking will have a role in shaping corporate strategy for internal investments in the next generation of networking and networked environments including internal research, capability development and enterprise infrastructure to ensure MITRE is best positioned to deliver on its public service mission to its sponsors.

Local and overnight travel to geographically dispersed sponsor and MITRE locations will be required.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Leading the direction of the Infrastructure and Networking Innovation Center, creating a unified vision and strategy for the organization, and shaping the processes and capabilities required to best support the organization
  • Proactively identify the major national challenges and technology opportunities within the innovation center's technical competencies, partnering with other MITRE Directors to build cross-domain teams to tackle the challenges
  • Defining, maturing and evolving the research, technical capabilities, and labs, and applying those to solve national challenge problems
  • Workforce development and building an integrated team including recruiting and training world class talent to enable a growing work program
  • Fostering an environment of technical excellent, research currency, and impact
  • Partnering with leaders across MITRE's business units to support strategic planning, work program shaping, and workforce planning
  • Management of division operations and serving as direct supervisor to department heads and division staff
  • Building dynamic partnerships with industry and academia to advance the center's capabilities, technical stature, and brand
  • Advancing infrastructure and networking capabilities through innovation, external partnering, and direct work program shaping in alignment with MITRE Labs, MITRE NSEC, and MITRE MPS Priorities
  • Leading new partnerships across government, industry, and academia to advance solutions to national challenges
Basic Qualifications:
  • Requires a minimum of 15 years of related experience leading technology development and integration, strategy and business development, technical and engineering services, and program and portfolio management with a Bachelor's degree; or 12 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 10 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Experience building and leading geographically dispersed organizations with a highly technical work program and significant number of employees
  • 10+ years of hands on and management experience in infrastructure, networking, or related areas
  • Demonstrated technical depth as shown by external technical stature, with a published record of research, development, scientist or engineering program impact
  • Excellent leadership skills including persistent, tactful, and persuasive communications, influencing, conflict resolution, and building trust
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing lines of work to include funding, staffing and management of teams
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage technical expertise to build and shape a portfolio of sponsor-funded programs through collaborative and effective organizational partnership
  • History of team building, achieving team goals and growing trust
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a strategic vision and use that vision to guide short and long-term execution.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong partner and sponsor relationships at the most senior levels of diverse organizations.
  • Active DoD Top Secret Clearance and be willing to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI Clearance.
  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced education with a relevant Master's degree or a PhD.
  • Familiarity with national security and public sector problem sets
  • Demonstrated expertise working with senior government leaders, as well as diverse commercial organizations from small start-ups to large established corporations
  • History of success developing new pilots, programs, and mission applications, including navigating both internal organizational processes and government programmatic processes.
  • Maturity and expertise balancing performance and mission impact against effective risk management and technical quality.
  • Demonstrated comfort with ambiguity and change in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through influence.
  • Ability to prioritize across multiple competing demands and simultaneously handle diverse commitments to multiple stakeholders.
  • TS/SCI clearance
