Education Requirements: Bachelors degree in civil, structural, or mechanical engineering, or related field from an ABET accredited college required. At minimum, the candidate will hold an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate, or able to obtain an EIT certification within 6 months of hire required. Candidate with an emphasis on construction and geotechnical or structural engineering preferred.

Experience: Previous engineering or construction related experience in a related industry (i.e., heavy civil, industrial, utilities) preferred. The addition of surveying experience is a plus.

Position Summary: Provides engineering project design and support for renewable energy projects (wind, solar, battery storage, etc.). Works with the Senior Engineers Civil & Structures and Senior Project Engineers to manage 3rd party project engineering firms and coordinates with Blattner Internal Engineering and other stakeholders.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Assists the Senior Engineers Electrical and Senior Project Engineers to support Blattner Internal Engineering and other stakeholders with the project design through project completion.
  1. Aligns construction teams to ensure they have the necessary design information, quantities, and specifications to build the projects.
  1. Creates designs that satisfy the design life of the power plant by establishing compliance with local, state, and international building codes and company best practices.
  1. Creates designs that provide the most economical means to satisfy the design life of the power plant. Collaborates across company departments, with outside vendors, suppliers, and technical firms to explore innovative ideas, methods, materials, equipment, software, and technologies that save cost, increase efficiencies, promote safety, and provide strategic benefits.
  1. Establishes safe engineering designs that compliment company, state, and federal safety regulations. Assures projects are designed in compliance with all applicable safety standards including NESC, NEC, NPFA, OSHA, and others.
  1. Participates in design reviews, ensures construction activities are following project drawings and specifications, and validates red-line markups are complete and accurate.
  1. Supports the project design by ensuring the design meets the contractual requirements from Client, Company, and Industry Codes and Standards.
  1. Works with the Senior Engineers Civil & Structures to develop preliminary designs, performs takeoffs, reviews Owner provided RFP (request for proposal) documentation/specifications, reviews proposals from 3rd party engineering firms, identifies engineering risks/opportunities, and substantiates engineering within proposals for the Estimators to bid.
  1. Coordinates directly with the Estimators, CAD Designers, and Supply Chain, utilizing the Value Driver Map and guided by the Senior Engineers Civil & Structures to increase the quality of estimates and competitiveness of proposals.
  1. Supports the Senior Engineers Electrical for the accuracy and detail of engineering within proposals and enhancing the clarification of assumptions/exceptions showing contract and specification compliance.
  1. Solves problems by applying factual evidence and sustainable solutions that are safe, transparent, and documentable.
  1. Operates with multiple levels of technical and non-technical fields. Engages in technical fields of structural steel, structural wood, crane rigging, structural reinforced concrete, foundations, soil and atmospheric corrosion, hydrology, geotechnical, surveying, grading, laser scanning, and GPR studies.

  1. Identifies opportunities for streamlining work and reducing waste in order to improve efficiency.
  2. Provides project feedback to estimating teams to capture lessons learned.
  3. Seeks opportunities to add value to projects. Performs economic analysis and value engineering to determine cost effective solutions and prepare written recommendations. Communicates value engineering for incorporation into future designs.
  4. Recognizes how changes to design impact cost. Shares impacts with supervisor and associated departments/teams.
  5. Collaborates with electrical engineering as needed.
  6. Assists with special projects as needed.
  7. Performs other duties per supervisors discretion.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have a valid drivers license and an acceptable motor vehicle driving record (MVR).
  • Basic knowledge of equipment and their appropriate applications.
  • Effective communication skills (oral, written, listening, presentation) to effectively work with owners, vendors, employees, landowners, etc.
  • Combination of technical training and civil or structural construction field experience, as well as the ability to perform administrative tasks.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Strong organizational, scheduling, planning, and prioritization skills.
  • Travel for project-based purposes (nationwide). Position is estimated to require travel 5% of the time.
