Summary of Working as a Counselor:
  • The Counselor (Adoption Support, Family Therapist) is responsible for assessing and providing voluntary services to Central Illinois families formed through adoption and subsidized guardianship. Services include in-home assessments, crisis and other therapeutic interventions, education, training, support groups, respite, advocacy and referrals to community services.
  • WORK SCHEDULE: Flexible, 37.5 hours/week Monday - Friday; must be available some evenings to meet client needs
  • Salary/non-exempt, starting pay based on experience and licensure/certifications
  • Unlicensed, recent master's graduates or new therapists starting pay: $53,000+
  • Licensed therapists starting pay: $57,000+
Responsibilities:
  • Assessment: Conducts Mental Health Assessments that are compliant with COA.
  • Service/Treatment Planning: With the input of client families, plans services and treatments that will strengthen and support the families and focus child(ren). All Individualized Treatment Plans must be Medicaid Rule 132 and COA compliant.
  • Mentoring, Advocating, Supporting, and Educating: In accordance with the service goals, provides mentoring, advocacy, support, and education that will protect children, preserve families and enhance the mental health of children and families alike.
  • Therapeutic Interventions: Provides appropriate therapeutic interventions that will support the focus child(ren) and their families to enhance their overall level of functioning.
  • Record keeping: Documentation must meet agency and COA requirements for timeliness, completeness and accuracy.
Requirements of a Counselor (Family Therapist, Adoption Support & Preservation):
  • Master's Degree in counseling, social work, or related field required.
  • Must be available some evenings/weekends and willing to drive distances to meet clients in their homes
  • LCPC, LCSW, or LMFT preferred, not required; should have the ability to work toward licensure during employment
  • Valid Driver's license with adequate insurance and driving record.
