Title: Ebook Developer / Typesetter

Division: Publishing Division

Reports to: Director of Production

Responsibilities:

The Ebook Developer / Typesetter is responsible for creating and distributing Crossway ebooks, and typesetting Bible and book projects under the oversight of the Director of Production. THIS IS A NON-REMOTE POSITION.

E-book Projects:

  • Utilize and maintain our in-house ebook generation process.
  • Work closely with the Typesetting and Editorial teams on complex interiors, ensuring consistent results in ebook production.
  • Assist in the technical aspects of distributing digital files to vendors.
  • Oversee updates to ebook products for reprint corrections and adapt back-catalog products to current ebook standards.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact with Bookwire, Crossway's third-party ebook distribution partner.
  • Assist in setting up new ebook channels, including coordination of the contractual process.
  • Effectively communicate with members of the Production department and with other departments and third-party vendors.
  • Perform other related duties and special responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Production.
Book Projects:
  • Typeset new print projects using Crossway's templates and in-house typesetting process.
  • Tag manuscripts with the metadata and codes that are needed to support the Cornerstone workflow and publishing process, for web, print and ebooks.
  • Enter corrections in books during the routing process.
  • Enter reprint corrections and create new pre-build files for ebooks when needed.
  • Utilize scripts that support typesetting work.
  • Produce digital product pre-builds for ebooks for new and archived content.
  • Troubleshoot problems that arise in the processing of content data.
Bible Projects:
  • Typeset new Bible projects using Crossway's in-house typesetting process.
  • Utilize automated proofreading software and work closely with the Bible Proofreader to ensure accurate typesetting.
  • Repurpose existing typesets for additional formats.
  • Prepare final files for printing.
  • Maintain published content across various formats as needed for print and digital applications.
  • Assist other departments and third parties in working with various formats.
Qualifications and Experience Required:
  • A college degree (BA or BS)
  • Interest in design, typography, and typesetting
  • Attention to detail
  • Knowledge of epub specifications
  • Experience with scripting languages (especially Python and JavaScript) a plus
  • Experience working with XML, CSS, HTML a plus
  • Previous experience with ebook or web design a plus
  • Familiarity with InDesign and Acrobat a plus
  • Experience working with Bibles a plus
  • Passion for the Word of God

Starting Salary:

Competitive salary based on previous work experience, education, acquired skills, and aptitude. Starting salary commensurate with current standards for comparable positions at Crossway and similar companies in Christian publishing and ministry.
