Job Description

The Associate Director provides programmatic and direct student support for both the Student Support Services and Student Support Services - STEM & Health Sciences programs which operate in Chatham, Harnett, and Lee Counties. The Associate Director gives SSS students an opportunity to explore issues and concerns about college life, improve communication and interpersonal skills, manage stress and life challenges effectively, and make positive changes that lead to increased academic success.
- Travel to the Lillington and Pittsboro Campuses expected to happen weekly
- Overnight travel for professional development, Student Transfer and Student cultural events up to 15-20 days per year annually.
- This position may have occasional travel between campuses and for training. Occasional after hours may be required.
- Assist with student recruitment, review of application, interviews, and enrollment process;
- Develop a College Success Plan (CSP) with each new participant, including a checklist of recommended services and a timeline for completion, and share CSPs with other SSS staff for review and action;
- Conduct targeted outreach to students referred by Academic Coaches or others by providing counseling designed to alleviate barriers to student success or making referrals to local mental health resources along with the Director;
- Advise appropriate deans or department chairs regarding student concerns;
- Coordinate returning student retention activities each semester for new participants and continuing students;
- Supervise planning and implementation cultural enrichment trips and transfer trips for program participants as well as attend assigned cultural and transfer student trips;
- Enhance the development of participants' non-cognitive skills through group activities, cultural enrichment, career preparation, SMART goal setting, time management workshops, and mentorship programs;
- Serve as lead point of contact for all students with disabilities and train other members of the SSS staff on topics related to students with disabilities in postsecondary education;
- Document all contacts and services electronically and in student files, maintaining confidentiality of student data;
- Assists in the preparation of Annual Performance Reports for the Department of Education:
- Establishes and maintains an inventory control system to monitor SSS equipment and supplies.
- Assist Director in programmatic budget:
- Attends meetings, conferences and seminars ( State, Local and National) related to programs mission and goals- up to 15 days per year;
- Plan the annual Graduation Banquet for program graduates and their families;
- Assist Director of Student Support Services with administration of SSS supplemental grant aid program;
- Meet weekly with other SSS staff to discuss achievements and concerns of the program and individual students, and implement program modifications for improvement, if necessary;
- Report monthly to Director of Student Support Services;
- Collaborate with college administrators, faculty, and staff to promote retention, graduation, and 4-year transfer of all Student Support Services participants, including possibly serving on Academic Advising, Academic Policy, Financial Aid, Scholarship, or Student Engagement and Learning committees;
- Engage with other TRiO staff members to provide formative assessment and continuous improvement of program delivery;
- Manages grant administration and leads team in times of Director Absence;
- Other duties as assigned.

- Master's Degree required in Counseling, Social Work, or other related field.
- Or in pursuit of a Master's Degree
- Two years of experience counseling individuals with disabilities and/or students from low-income, first- generation backgrounds, preferably in an educational setting;
- Or an equivalent combination of higher education and experience will be considered.
- Knowledge of collegiate procedures and best practices for promoting retention, academic success, and graduation of college students;
- Familiarity with ADA law/disability services;
- Ability to effectively plan and implement program activities and services;
- Ability to assist students with development of non-cognitive skills, achieving academic success by overcoming challenges, financial aid, preparing for university transfer, and career readiness;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
- Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with first-generation, low-income students and/or students with disabilities and willingness to advocate on their behalf within the college community;
- Ability to work as an effective part of a team;
- Ability to make effective presentations to a variety of audiences;
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines;
- Ability to utilize technology effectively;
- Experience fostering and maintaining positive and collaborative relationships with other on-campus departments and staff;
- Understanding and respect for the diverse backgrounds of students, staff, and college community.
- Experience working in a community college;
- Knowledge of and experience specifically with TRiO or SSS services, objectives, and regulations;
- Strong organizational skills;
- Administrative experience;
- Experience with Blumen or Datatel as data management systems or Aviso Coaching software;
- Personal experience overcoming academic, cultural, financial, or other obstacles similar to those faced by low-income or first-generation students or students with disabilities participating in the Student Support Services program.
