Job Title: Phlebotomist

Job Description

This role involves working at a facility in Williamsburg that focuses on Oncology patients, who typically have less prominent veins, making blood draws more challenging. The Phlebotomist will provide expertise in blood draws and specimen preparation, ensuring high-quality care for patients.
Responsibilities
  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and perform decontamination procedures.
  • Update patient information and collect specimens according to established procedures.
  • Explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods clearly and courteously to patients.
  • Use straight needles and/or butterfly needles to collect samples.
  • Understand and execute all physicians' orders accurately.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
  • Verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport and store them according to required temperature and protocols.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Wear appropriate attire, including personal protective equipment.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to address inquiries.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 6 months of phlebotomy experience.
  • Experience in either hospital or practice settings.
  • Proficiency in standard phlebotomy procedures, including the order of draw.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to handle high volume and challenging blood draws.
Work Environment

The work environment is a very high-volume center. The role requires adherence to safety protocols and the use of personal protective equipment. The setting may be in a hospital or practice environment.
