POSITION SUMMARY

Financial Counselors work closely with the Patient Access and Patient Financial Services departments to provide financial counseling and information to Sky Lakes Medical Center patients. Responsibilities include estimating patient financial liability prior to services, screening patients for financial assistance, maintaining patient correspondence, and offering financial counseling to patients and families in line with the facility's policies. The role primarily involves desk work, including phone communication, data entry, and face-to-face patient interactions, requiring strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail. The ideal candidate will thrive in a dynamic environment, demonstrating adaptability and resilience in managing change and evolving workflows.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:Financial Counselors are expected to manage their workflow independently, ensuring all duties are completed daily. Additional hours may be required during periods of high outpatient volume. Financial Counselors must demonstrate strong leadership abilities while maintaining proficiency in all team responsibilities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, along with competency in math, spelling, and computer literacy.

Preferred: Bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency in both spoken and written communication. Familiarity with hospital insurance and billing processes. Two or more years of experience in a hospital, clinic, or healthcare business office.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS

Medium physical demand level capabilities required. Must be able to work independently as well as with coworkers, other staff professionals, guild volunteers, patients and visitors. Must be able to prioritize work, organize time efficiently and attend to detail. Must be able to sit, walk and stand for extended periods of time. Have the ability to lift up to 40 pounds, push wheelchair with up to 250 pounds, and assist a patient in and out of a chair, wheelchair, or from an automobile, and ride in an elevator.

  • Remains proficient in EPIC workflows and automations.
  • Understands ancillary department functions and procedures, responding to patient and billing inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Collaborates closely with scheduling and pre-authorization departments to assess process improvements and overcome obstacles.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of patient information.
  • Demonstrates competence in alignment with the organization's defined mission, vision, values, and strategic plan.
  • Shows awareness of age-specific, cultural, and spiritual practices, as well as the functional status and physical needs of customers, through proficiency testing, skill demonstration, adherence to core standards for service excellence, and documentation review.
  • Remains cooperative and flexible with additional assignments.
