Overview:

Log Buyer Mendocino Forest Products (MFP) is looking for an experienced Log Buyer to join our Forestry team in Ukiah, CA

The base salary for this position is $80,000 to $120,000. Your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic locations, skills, education and/or experience. Please keep in mind that that the range published is the full base salary. We also offer a generous benefits package.

The Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Collectively providing 950 employees and their families with excellent wages and benefits in communities throughout the Western USA. Additionally, the Mendocino Companies own and operate a 25-megaWatt biomass cogeneration power plant and wood pellet plant.

The Primary function of this position is to act in the Log Buyer capacity performing the necessary log procurement functions for Mendocino Forest Products reporting to the Fiber Resource Manager.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates with the Fiber Resource Manager to help implement the annual log procurement and delivery plans for our two sawmill facilities in Ukiah and Scotia, CA.
  • Assists with the annual log procurement plan, log deliveries from all sources, proper log manufacturing, compliance with all regulatory requirements, 3rd party log suppliers and customers, the purchase, sale and/or delivery of logs.
  • Work with suppliers, customers, and the Companys Log Yard supervisors to correct log flow or log quality problems.
  • Assists in determining the log requirements to be purchased from and sold to 3rd Parties for the upcoming fiscal year, detailing the species, diameter class, and corresponding volumes.
  • Identify prospective suppliers and consumers for the annual log procurement requirements.
  • Cruise, inspect, and value logs from specific sellers.
  • Coordinate with Forest Managers to develop a log delivery schedule.
  • Build positive working relationships with all 3rd Party Landowners, Log Buyers, Timber Operators and Company Managers to promote the Company as the customer/supplier of choice.
  • Monitor local and regional log markets to assess delivered log values and delivery costs.
  • Complete formal bids for log purchases, consistent with the Annual Log Purchase & Sale Plan
  • Prepare Requests for Bids, as applicable for log sales, consistent with the Annual Log Purchase & Sale Plan
  • Negotiate favorable terms with buyers and sellers of 3rd Party logs.
  • Assist with procurement and administration of contracts for timber harvest on 3rd party stumpage sales.
  • Monitor actual log flows (shipments) from company and purchase suppliers to ensure compliance with quality requirements and agreed delivery schedules.
  • Develop new log sources and consumers to ensure a balance of supply and demand.
  • Assist with establishment and maintaining a log quality program with all 3rd party log suppliers that will maximize sawmill throughput, overrun, and grade yield.
  • Maintain a well-organized digital file of all log purchase and sale bids, contracts, and other relevant documents.
  • Assist in logging administration, and work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors and coworkers .
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree (B. S.), Forestry preferred, from four-year, fully accredited college or university.
  • Four years of experience; or equivalent education and experience.
  • Knowledge of log scaling and timber cruising principles and practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, and functional capability with the other applications in Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of GIS software such as ArcGIS products a plus
  • Must have ability to use GPS, directional compass, and topographical maps.
  • Must carry a valid California driver license and have a clean DMV record.
  • Must be eligible to operate company vehicles including automobiles, trucks and/or all-terrain vehicles in accordance with company policy guidelines.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents (safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, etc.).

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties and responsibilities of this job, the employee is occasionally required to, sit; stand; walk; stoop or kneel, crouch or crawl; use hands.
  • The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and communicate.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, color, and ability to adjust focus.
  • In the work environment there is regular exposure to outside adverse weather conditions.
  • The employee will regularly work in or around active logging operations, log yards warehouse or production areas.
  • Noise levels can be moderate to loud when outside of the office areas.
  • Safety Glasses, reflective vests and safety shoes are required outside of the office areas.
