The Mammoth Disposal Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for state recycling mandate outreach in the community to all businesses and schools, planning, organizing, overseeing, coordinating, and assisting in the administration of the Town of Mammoth Lakes' (TOML's) sustainability programs, projects, and strategies to improve and expand TOML's sustainability efforts, as well as quarterly updates and outreach/education in Inyo and Mono counties. This position represents Mammoth Disposal at TOML, Mammoth Lakes and Bishop Chambers of Commerce, and all functions, and coordinates recycling efforts with a variety of private, public, and community organizations and regulatory agencies and develops recommendations for action, policies, and procedures. The Sustainability Coordinator provides support and outreach of state and local mandates relating to solid waste and sustainability and will help to ensure compliance will all mandates for TOML, Inyo and Mono counties.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assumes responsibility for sustainability projects, programs, and strategies including development and implementation of programs to reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions and in support of state and local mandates.
  • Attends all CalRecycle public workshops, webinars and events virtually and provides updates to TOML.
  • Updates and educates Mammoth Disposal and Bishop Waste employees internally about recycling mandates.
  • Comprehends the franchise agreements as they relate to sustainability and recycling between Mammoth Disposal and Bishop Waste and our jurisdictions; Town of Mammoth Lakes, Inyo County/City of Bishop and Mono County.
  • Meets with and informs other Waste Connections sustainability coordinators virtually about state recycling mandates.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of program goals, objectives, and policies; assists TOML in the developments of policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines to support programs.
  • Assists with Operations in the Buy Back Center (BBC) and recycling education/training for all BBC employees.
  • Performs a variety of complex professional administrative and analytical work in support of assigned program(s); plans, coordinates, and implements assigned program(s); monitors and tracks program performance and compliance.
  • In conjunction with TOML, ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing solid waste, recycling, waste reduction, conservation, and sustainability.
  • On behalf of TOML applies for and administers various federal, state, and local grants; monitors and prepares reports to ensure compliance with grant requirements; tracks and monitors performance metrics and expenditures, as needed.
  • Conducts outreach, engagement, and public education activities to inform members of the community, businesses, outside agency officials, stakeholders, and the general public regarding CA state, TOML, Inyo and Mono counties sustainability projects, programs, policies, procedures, and standards.
  • In partnership with TOML - researches, analyzes, prepares, and presents reports and other necessary correspondence related to sustainability programs, mandates, and initiatives to the Town Council and a variety of committees, boards, and commissions.
  • Performs all trash assessments for the Green Business program in conjunction with High Sierra Energy Foundation.
  • Implements all Mammoth Unified School District (MUSD) recycling and sustainability programs, including the garden tower project.
  • Performs recycling and sustainability assemblies and demos in all MUSD schools, and several schools in Inyo and Mono counties.
  • Provides marketing, advertising, and outreach for social media platforms and Mammoth Disposal website.
  • Works several weekend events as assigned, including the Earth Day events in Bishop and Lone Pine.
  • Perform additional administrative functions and related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
  • Principles of program planning, development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Principles and practices of community engagement and public relations.
  • Principles and techniques of conducting analytical studies, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting effective and technical reports.
  • Public speaking and marketing skills.

  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office programs required; advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs preferred.

  • Assist TOML with planning, developing, managing, and promoting complex sustainability program and project objectives, practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with the public, employees, and partners, with an emphasis on exceptional customer service and public outreach.
  • Understand, interpret, implement, effectively communicate, and ensure compliance with all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, and standards relevant to work performed.
  • Research and identify grant funding opportunities and partnerships, write proposals, administer and monitor awarded funds, and ensure compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence, policies, procedures, and other written materials.
  • Effectively represent the Mammoth Disposal in meetings with governmental agencies; community groups; various business, professional, and regulatory organizations; and in meetings with individuals.
  • Independently organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments.
  • Provide accurate information when resolving internal and external inquiries.
  • Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.
  • Coordinate with internal departments, community organizations, and other government agencies.
  • Understand, adhere to, and assist in the implementation of state and jurisdiction policies and procedures.
  • Be detail oriented and meet deadlines when creating reports, preparing documentation and correspondence, and when completing complex projects.
  • Establish and maintain a variety of filing, record keeping, and tracking systems.
  • Deliver exceptional service to internal as well as external customers.
