Bit Design Research Engineer

JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsible for conceptualizing, developing, and testing novel technologies for use on drill bits. The ideal candidate has a working knowledge of oilfield drill bit design as well as experience with mechanical design of rugged components for use in downhole environments. Technical creativity and inventive drive are key to success. Works on a small team of experts dedicated to advancing the state of drill bit technology.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develops concepts and ideas into novel physical bits or components for testing

• Uses engineering creativity and works with thought leaders in the organization to invent new to world drill bit technology

• Designs novel components for drill bits including concepts with moving parts

• Works with advanced and hard materials such as tungsten carbide, diamond, and metal composites

• Designs laboratory test procedures, analyzes data, and documents results

• Generates invention documentation for patent consideration

• Works with vendors, outside industries, and academia to identify technology opportunities for bit improvement

• Engages internal engineering resources for collaboration and concept evaluation

• Works with manufacturing and operations to test and commercialize drill bit technologies

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

• Mechanical engineering or similar degree

• 10+ years mechanical design experience

• Prior experience designing oilfield and downhole equipment

• Some experience with PDC bit design strongly preferred

• Expert user in CAD

• Proficient using FEA and computational design software helpful

• Familiar with additive methods and advanced manufacturing techniques helpful
