Earth Systems provides a full spectrum of design and construction-related services including geotechnical engineering, geology, environmental consulting, and construction materials testing and special inspection. Earth Systems is founded on our people and has more than 55 years of experience working in communities throughout California.

We are currently recruiting for a leadership-driven and self-motivated Geotechnical Project Engineer in our Bermuda Dunes, CA office.

The Geotechnical Project Engineer is responsible for planning, interpreting, organizing, scheduling and managing projects through all phases of development. Establishes and monitors budgets, manages project team, assists with project scheduling, and billing. This position is responsible for maintaining client relationships.

The Project Engineer must demonstrate experience in all phases of geotechnical engineering, including materials testing and inspections, and a growing knowledge of project management. Plan and may participate in field assignments that will include observation of explorations; geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring; and inspection of construction of geotechnical structures.

Core Competencies include strong business acumen, an understanding how to effectively negotiate and manage services, billable utilization, and the impact of financial drivers for the company. The Project Engineer models behavioral values, accepts personal responsibility, and encourages feedback to create team synergy in pursuing measurable goals. Accepts constructive criticism and implements feedback into resolution, uses empathy with communication, and identifies clear expectations to internal staff and external customers.

Education and Qualifications:

  • B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering with Geotechnical Engineering concentration required.
  • M.S. Degree in Geotechnical Engineering preferred.
  • CA Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) required.
  • CA Licensed Geotechnical Engineer (GE) preferred.
Required Experience:
  • 5+ years of experience in geotechnical consulting.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience and familiarity with the local engineering practice.
  • Experience interacting with clients and initiating business development.
  • Materials testing/Special Inspection/laboratory oversight background preferred.
  • Experience with DSA Laboratory Evaluation and Acceptance (LEA) program and experience providing engineering oversight as Laboratory of Record (LOR) and Geotechnical Engineer of Record (GEOR) preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage geotechnical, forensic, and construction projects, including consulting with clients, design professionals, and contractors.
  • Plan and supervise soil exploration, logging, and classification.
  • Schedule laboratory testing to evaluate soil types, behavior and engineering properties.
  • Evaluate geologic and seismic hazards, including liquefaction, lateral spreading and dry wand settlement; provide mitigation recommendations when needed.
  • Analyze natural, fill, and reinforced slopes.
  • Evaluate distressed structures and failed slopes and give mitigation recommendations.
  • Provide bearing capacity, earth pressures and pavement recommendations.
  • Provide analysis of and design recommendations for shallow and deep foundations.
  • Provide analysis of and design parameters for temporary and permanent earth retention.
  • Provide grading and ground modifications recommendations.
  • Prepare proposals, schedules and reports to achieve project goals while managing budgets.
  • Managing, developing and mentoring field and laboratory personnel.
  • Development of construction quality control programs and implementation.
  • Maintaining laboratory certifications and accreditations, coordinating with certifying and accrediting organizations.
  • Engineering oversight of Special Inspectors and material testing programs.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Thorough understanding of project work plans, schedules, staffing, and budgets.
  • Ability to read and properly interpret project plans.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations and analyses and understand validity of findings.
  • Advanced knowledge of building systems.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations pertinent to Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Advanced knowledge of testing and inspection of construction materials, standards, and codes.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects of a complex scope.
  • Proficiency in Project Management Software preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to effectively meet deadlines.
  • Ability to complete tasks with accuracy and with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with integrity, trust and commitment, as outlined in core competencies.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely; both orally and in writing.
  • Understands AutoCAD and other design software.
  • Understands terminology, methods, practices, and techniques used in technical reports and project preparation.
  • Able to receive and execute the direction of Principal Engineers and/or Managers.
Availability to commute/relocate:
  • Reliably commute or plan to relocate prior to starting work (Required).
