General Summary of Position Supervises security staff; monitors and provides protection and security for hospital buildings and premises, and for associates, patients, and visitors. Assists with managing of the daily operations of the Security Department. Patrols hospital property, responds to calls for assistance, and reports on conditions, objects or persons which may impact the security and/or safety of patients, associates, physicians, visitors, or vendors, and responds according to established policies, procedures and regulations. Security Officers are essential associates in a 24/7 environment and may be required to be flexible with scheduling and work ""off-shifts."" Must obtain and maintain a connection to corporate security leadership and State of Maryland and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department Special Police Officer commission to carry out duties associated with crime control and response, designated as an Unarmed Security Officer, assigned and deployed with the hospital consistent with the limitations of the Unarmed SPO commission from the Maryland State Police or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Develops and contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to system and department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Ensures compliance with hospital/facility policies and procedures and governmental/accreditation regulations. Assists in selecting, training, orienting, and assigning department staff. Develops standards of performance, evaluates performance, and conducts performance management planning. Initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions. Maintains ongoing communication with office staff to review programs, provide feedback, discuss new developments, and exchange information. Acts as a resource and mentor to security staff. Conducts in-service training as necessary. Conducts foot security patrols of hospital buildings and grounds, as required. Observes and monitors conditions, objects, or persons which might require police action. Controls access to and inspects packages of those leaving buildings. Reports all safety, security, and law violations. Immediately responds to emergencies to provide necessary assistance to employees and customers. Responds to security and medical code calls. Monitors camera surveillance system. Monitors conduct of patients and visitors on hospital premises; confronts unauthorized persons for questioning as needed. Proficient in and utilizes nonviolent crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to ensure staff, patients, visitors and all others remain safe, calm and respected while onsite. Testifies at legal proceedings, hearings and trials. When responding to circumstances where the exercise of SPO authority may be required, takes appropriate measures to secure the scene, preserve evidence, detain and secure suspected criminal perpetrators, and assist responding law enforcement authority as directed by Director. Completes written reports and when subpoenaed or requested, notifies Legal Counsel for MedStar of same and gains guidance to testify at legal proceedings, hearings and trials. Works cross-functionally to ensure safe and secure environments. Assists in the development of department goals, objectives, policies and procedures. Ensures compliance with hospital/facility policies and procedures and governmental and accreditation regulations. Collaborates with local, state, and national agencies relative to hospital security investigations including the pursuit of criminal actions against individuals when warranted. Directs or escorts agency personnel to hospital buildings and premises. Ensures maintenance of department equipment and supplies. Investigates reported violations of criminal law and hospital policy occurring on the campus. Prepares incident reports, investigative reports and other documents. Conducts follow-up investigations in an attempt to resolve previous incidents. Reviews incident reports submitted by others for completeness and accuracy. Maintains complete, concise and accurate records of all security investigations and actions. Completes these activities in a timely manner. Monitors security activities to ensure secure and safe conditions for associates, patients, and visitors and to protect hospital buildings, assets, and premises. May assist in conducting foot and vehicle patrols of the premises; report safety, fire and security violations. Interacts with law enforcement and fire authorities regarding violations on the property as necessary. Readily provides assistance to internal and external customers; escorts individuals as needed by foot or by vehicle. May assist in restraining individuals when warranted. Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required and
- Bachelor's degree in related field preferred
Experience
- 5-7 years Progressively more responsible job-related security or prior law enforcement experience. required and
- Prior supervisory experience strongly prefer experience required in healthcare, university, and/or hospitality setting (patient-first, customer-first environment). required
- One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.
Licenses and Certifications
- DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State (DRLIC) Valid driver's license. required and
- MD Special Police Commission - MDSPC Commissioned as a Special Police Officer by the State of Maryland State Police and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department within 6 months of hire. within 180 Days required and
- Special Police Officer - DC - SPO Commissioned as a Special Police Officer by the State of Maryland State Police and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department within 6 months of hire. within 180 Days required and
- IAHSS - Certification As A Security Officer Basic or Advanced Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) certification from IAHSS preferred and
- Certified Protection Professional (CPP) - Board Certified in Security Management preferred and
- CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross. within 90 Days required and
- Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit. and
- Must successfully complete all MedStar initial training related to violence prevention, de-escalation and crisis prevention intervention. required
