Job Summary

The Pulmonary Circulation Center is seeking a talented and motivated Data Scientist to join our interdisciplinary team dedicated to advancing the understanding and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. As a Data Scientist, you will play a key role in leveraging statistical and machine learning techniques to extract valuable insights from electronic health records linked to genomic and longitudinal wearables data. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research and directly impact patient care.

About the Department:

The Vanderbilt Institute for Clinical & Translational Research (VICTR) is Vanderbilts virtual home for clinical and translational research. Supported by Vanderbilt University Medical Centers Office of Research and the NIH-sponsored Clinical and Translational Service Award (CTSA), the mission of the institute is to transform the way ideas and research discoveries make their way from origin to patient care. VICTR functions to help researchers and clinicians do their jobs better by providing tools and support to improve the quality of research, publications, grant writing, and training for future doctors and researchers.

Key Responsibilities

Work closely with clinicians and other healthcare professionals to understand their data needs and develop solutions that contribute to research, publication in medical journals, and improving patient care.
Participate in research projects to advance the understanding of cardiovascular disease through data-driven approaches.
Design, develop, and modify scripts or software applications to support data management, extraction, and analysis.
Integrate data from various sources, including electronic health records, longitudinal wearable device data, and genomics datasets.
Conduct in-depth analysis of diverse datasets by applying statistical and machine learning methods to extract meaningful insights for research projects.
Develop statistical models to identify potential disease risks and outcomes.
Build machine learning algorithms to assist in early detection of cardiac diseases.
Effectively communicate findings to both technical and non-technical collaborators through reports, presentations, and visualizations.
Design and develop algorithms for the phenotyping of cardiovascular disease.
Collaborate with healthcare professionals to ensure the accuracy of phenotyping algorithms and refine as needed.
Ensure data quality and implement strategies for data cleaning and normalization.
Stay abreast of the latest advancements in data science and machine learning to propose and implement innovative solutions.

Required Skills

Proficient in both R and Python for data analysis, statistical modeling, and machine learning. While expertise in both R and Python is preferred, candidates with strong proficiency in one language and a willingness to learn the other will also be considered.
Experience with SQL including data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes.
Extensive experience in exploratory data analysis and statistical analysis to derive meaningful insights.
Strong understanding and practical application of regression, clustering, and predictive modeling.
Proficient in using tools such as ggplot2, Matplotlib, Seaborn, or Plotly to create clear and compelling data visualizations.
Experience with Spark and PySpark is preferred, but not required.
Familiarity with the Ruby programming language is preferred, but not required.

Technical Capabilities

INFRASTRUCTURE (INTERMEDIATE)

Identifies the data-analytics problems that offer the greatest opportunities. Determines the correct data sets and variables. Collects large sets of structured and unstructured data from disparate sources. Cleans and validates the data to ensure accuracy, completeness, and uniformity. Devises and applies models and algorithms to mine the stores of big data. Analyzes the data to identify patterns and trends. Interprets the data to discover solutions and opportunities.

ANALYSIS AND TESTING (INTERMEDIATE)

Brings structure to large quantities of formless data and makes analysis possible. Identifies rich data sources, joins them with other, potentially incomplete data sources, cleans the resulting set and validates the data to ensure accuracy, completeness, and uniformity. Identifies trends, correlations, and high-level characteristics to detect key insights and make predictions. Finds a story within a data set and provides a coherent narrative about key data insights.

DATA PRODUCTS (INTERMEDIATE)

Uses machine learning and artificial intelligence to turn massive data streams produced by operations into insights. Uses programming languages such as Python, R, SQL, and Jupyter for statistics, mathematics, algorithms, modeling, data visualization, and reproducible research and reporting. Uses cloud computing, cloud-based services and APIs for data storage and access, machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI).

COMMUNICATION (NOVICE)

Delivers data to internal and external customers in the form of dashboards, reports, and emails. Effectively communicates technical and business ideas and information to others, including non-technical audiences in writing, with numbers, verbally and/or visually. Shares knowledge, ideas and information openly, and effectively sell new ideas and influences others.

Basic Qualifications

Masters in data science, biomedical informatics, public health, health policy, or related field with 3 years of experience
or PhD, MD, or equivalent doctoral degree with 0-2 years of experience
