A Brief Overview
Provides supervision of language interpretation and translation services for patients, family members, staff members, and physicians of the organization. Serves as a practice leader in the language and cultural needs of the non-English-speaking patients and families.

Essential Functions
  • Supervises staff. •Assists in the hiring and maintaining of high-quality interpreter skills, training, orientation, and ongoing performance of staff. •Provides instruction on medical interpreting practices to staff and care providers. •Provides leadership and guidance by sharing expertise with others. •Conducts employee performance management duties including completion and delivery of performance evaluations, setting goals, dissemination of information, coaching, addressing performance issues/routine correction actions, and recommending termination of employment. •Submits notifications for personnel actions (e.g., status changes, terminations) and keeps personnel records for direct reports. •Assists in planning and leading meetings.
  • Coordinates assignments, schedules and record keeping for Interpreters. •Develops, monitors and coordinates efficient utilization and schedules for interpreting services. •Maintains and updates interpreter mechanisms of assignments. •Approves schedules and monitors time worked in appropriate systems.
  • Interprets for non-English patients and families during encounters in the healthcare setting with physicians, nurses, other staff members, and outside agencies. These encounters could include admissions, discharges, clinic visits, surgeries, diagnostics, and emergency department. •Demonstrates exceptional knowledge and skills in two languages. •Demonstrates high level mastery of medical and colloquial terminology. •Documents provision of services on chart. •Prepares the setting for an interpreted session by physically arranging the space and by conducting a pre-session with staff and parents. •Interprets by phone or video to convey items such as pre-op orders, test results, clinic appointments, and other information as needed. •Translates instructions or other materials.
  • Assists in the coordination of patient education materials and access to these documents. •Educates staff on how to find and access patient/family education materials. •Coordinates translation of written patient education materials, brochures, consent forms, and medical reports from English into designated languages. •Responds to requests, facilitates the workflow and distribution mechanisms as needed. Communicates with staff across the enterprise regarding process and timeline for translations. •Translates, proofreads, and formats documents as needed.
  • Works closely with management to ensure provision of services, •Assists with planning, development, and incorporation of reports, projects, enhancements, refinements opportunities that result in effective and high-quality services. •Escalates complex problems for their direct involvement.
  • Educates staff and parents as to role of interpreters, both through formal training (inpatient teaching rounds, grand rounds, nursing orientation, and departmental staff meetings), and informal continuous teaching opportunities.
  • Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section
  • Adheres to the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care Code of Ethics.
Education Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university related to languages, communication, or health care field. Equivalent work experience may substitute for education. Required
Experience Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years' experience as a healthcare interpreter, preferably in an acute care pediatric environment. Required and
  • Formal medical interpreter training Required
Skills and Abilities
  • Skill in to speaking, reading, and writing both English and language pair fluently. (High proficiency)
  • Ability to interact with a variety of families and health care professionals. (High proficiency)
  • Advanced Bilingual skills with advanced medical vocabulary (High proficiency)
  • Skill in typing and computer word processing. (High proficiency)
  • Ability to respond to a variety of demands in a professional manner, and to prioritize multiple requests. (High proficiency)
  • Ability to preceptor, mentor and teach others. (High proficiency)
  • Advanced interpreting skills. Able to interpret by phone, video, and in-person. (High proficiency)
Licenses and Certifications
  • Current and valid certification as a Certified Medical Interpreter OR Certified Healthcare Interpreter. within 1 Year Required
