Overview:

The Department of Veterinary Clinical and Life Sciences (VCLS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Utah State University (USU) is seeking applicants for an assistant or associate professor of veterinary physiology with the assignment of 60% research, 35% teaching, and 5% service. This is a tenure-track, fiscal-year (12-month) position with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024. Review of applications will begin March 1, 2024, and continue until the position has been filled.

The candidate will provide instruction in veterinary physiology in the veterinary medical curriculum and develop and carry out an independent, nationally recognized research program that includes mentoring students to engage in quality research. The successful candidate will also seek external funding to support their research program and publish scholarship in peer-reviewed scientific outlets.

The candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of veterinary professionals by delivering veterinary physiology instruction in the new Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree curriculum. In this capacity, the candidate is also expected to develop and implement innovative teaching methodologies, assessment tools, and evaluation criteria to measure veterinary students mastery throughout the program's entirety. The candidate will also contribute to other curriculum activities associated with their expertise.

Responsibilities:

Position Responsibilities for Research:

  • Develop and carry out a high-quality research program that includes mentoring graduate and undergraduate, as well as veterinary medical students.
  • Obtain extramural funding to support an independent research program in the biomedical or life sciences.
  • Publish scholarship in peer-reviewed scientific journals and other outlets.
  • Steady and consistent record of research supporting scholarly activity.

Position Responsibilities for Teaching:

  • Deliver instruction in animal physiology in the DVM degree curriculum.
  • Develop and implement innovative teaching methodologies, assessment tools, and evaluation criteria in your area of instruction.
  • Contribute to developing the DVM degree curriculum and other curriculum activities associated with their expertise.

Position Responsibilities for Service:

  • Contribute to the department, college, university, and profession through service (e.g., serve on graduate student, curriculum, hiring, and admissions committees).


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD or DVM/PhD, or equivalent degree(s).
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and as a team member in a collaborative setting.

Additional Qualifications for consideration for the Rank of Associate Professor:

  • Demonstrated ability to design and successfully implement a nationally recognized research program.
  • Extensive track record of published peer-reviewed scientific research.
  • History of attracting significant federal research funding.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Postdoctoral research experience.

College/Department Highlights:

Currently, the USU CVM participates in a 2+2 program with the College of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University and the broader Washington Idaho Montana Utah (WIMU) Regional Program in Veterinary Medicine that provides instruction to 30 students in each class cohort. However, in 2022 the State of Utah approved the establishment of a full 4-year DVM degree program at USU with the goal of admitting its inaugural class of 40 students in the fall of 2025 and supporting a class size of 80 veterinary students in subsequent years. This position offers multiple opportunities for professional development in instruction, curriculum design, and innovative teaching methods.
