Job Title: Special Education Aide (Includes all areas of Special Education)
Summary:
The Special Education Aide's responsibility is to serve as a classroom assistant. The aide works directly with the assigned certified teacher(s) to assist with the implementation of student IEPs.
Qualifications:
All paraprofessionals entering employment after January 1, 2007 must be deemed "Highly Qualified" as defined in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. In order to be considered "Highly Qualified", an applicant must meet one of the following requirements:
•Possess an associate's degree from an accredited college; or
•Have earned 60 semester hours (or the equivalent) from an accredited college; or
•Have passed a state approved test (Parapro Workkeys or Parapro by ETS)
A Special Education Aide should also have the following credentials:
1. Ability to relate well with students, teachers, administration, faculty and staff, and parents
2. Ability to handle unforeseen situations in accordance with policy
3. Good physical health and the ability to lift and move 50 lbs.
4. Ability to move quickly and physically interact with students ranging in age and size-squatting, bending, low/floor seating, pushing (ex: wheelchair), grasping, etc.
Responsibilities:
Performance Responsibilities:
The scope of responsibilities can include any or all of the following as determined by specific placement and student needs:
1. Communicate with the assigned teacher(s) on a regular basis regarding student progress
2. Assist Special Education teacher, as appropriate, by providing:
a. small group and/or individual instruction under the supervision of the teacher
b. assistance as requested during seatwork activities
c. maintenance of classroom management plans/routines and/or individualized Behavior Intervention Plans
d. data collection documentation related to student academic/social/behavior progress, as appropriate
e. supervision of students during related arts, lunch, assemblies, field trips, mainstream classes, recess, etc.
f. assistance, as appropriate, for fine and gross motor tasks including packing and unpacking supplies, set-up of materials, scribing, assistance in lunch line, set up of lunch, feeding, etc.
g. assistance to children with clothing and toileting tasks as necessary, including transfers, changing diapers and other activities associated with this function while teaching personal hygiene in a manner allowing for independence
h. assistance with adaptive equipment and assistive technology
i. safety monitoring as students transition from one place to another in the classroom or on campus
j. facilitation of socialization and/or functional communication
3. Demonstrate knowledge of District policies, procedures and regulations
4. Participate in district-sponsored paraprofessional training opportunities, school programs, in-services, and staff meetings as required by the School Administrator or direct supervisor; required training may include such skills as CPR, first aid, feeding, lifting techniques, Nonviolent Physical Crisis Intervention, disability-specific trainings, Applied Behavior Analysis, and/or assistive technology (Total work week not to exceed 40 hours)
5. Report conflicts/concerns related to parents, teachers, and other school personnel to School Administration
6. All other duties as assigned by the School Administrator or direct supervisor

Reports To:
The person in this position reports to the School Administrator or Program Coordinator who may delegate supervision to a teacher.
Evaluation:
The Special Education Aide will be evaluated by the School Administration and/or Program Coordinator in accordance with Board policy.
Term of Employment:
This position works 9 ¼ months (185 days) per year and is paid on the Support/Annual Salary Schedule in Group K.
