Smith & Wesson is seeking highly motivated Interns to join our Engineering team for Summer 2024. This internship opportunity will provide hands-on experience and exposure to various functions in our Engineering department.

Location, Schedule, & Compensation:

In-office/non-remote

Maryville, TN

20-40 hours per week

Monday-Friday

Education and Experience:

* Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in a related field.

* Experience or interest in the manufacturing and/or firearms industry

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Project work to improve designs, build knowledge, & support business initiatives

* Learn and use engineering processes and methods

* Assist with failure analysis of steering components including root cause determination

* Problem solving support for testing and plant issues

* Work with manufacturing engineering for day-to-day troubleshooting, new launch, and data analysis

* Coordinate and organize testing and data analysis of parts with Eng. guidance for improvement

* Coordination assistance for prototype samples and tooling

* Drafting and or document control of Eng. systems to support the above activities

Competencies and Skills:

* Strong motivation to learn

* Mechanical aptitude

* Strong written and verbal communication skills

* SolidWorks skills a plus

* Currently enrolled in college or university's cooperative education program

* Student of Electrical/Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering or Technology

Physical Demands:

* The performance of this position requires exposure to manufacturing areas which require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses with side shields and mandatory hearing protection.

* Work is sometimes performed in a normal office setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards, and with substantial time spent working on a computer. Requires sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate computer keyboard and other office equipment.

Work Environment and Personal Protective Equipment:

Within the Smith & Wesson manufacturing facility, employees may be exposed to manufacturing noise, airborne liquid chemicals, fine particulate dust, ambient temperatures, and industrial lighting. Work environment is similar to most manufacturing operations. May be exposed to excessive noise, temperatures, hazards associated with working around moving machinery, work in confined quarters, exposure to vibrations and shop lighting, continuous exposure to hot temperatures, may be humid, odors, dust, continuous exposure to mechanical hazards, and occasional exposure to chemical hazards.

The following Personal Protective Equipment is required: Safety glasses with side shields and hearing protection are required when on the manufacturing floor. The use of additional personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when a job task(s) is being completed in or around your assigned department or in another department, this includes safety eyewear, hearing protection, and safety footwear.

Focus on support activities for the Manufacturing Engineering Department and help achieve best practice manufacturing processes and techniques.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* CAD using Solid Works to create Engineering drawings

* CAD using Solid Works to create Tool Designs (Fixture-Gauges-Cutter)

* Machining prototypes

* Building guns

* Testing product

* Scheduling and coordination of a variety of testing exercises to validate the performance of New Products

* Writing test reports

* Responding to requests for engineering services with thorough, accurate, timely and cost-effective solutions

* Using appropriate project management techniques to ensure tools, gauges, fixtures, equipment, department-layouts, routings, assembly procedures and CNC programs are fully defined, documented and implemented

* Conducting continuous evaluation and suggesting improvements within the manufacturing environment to assure quality and cost objectives are consistently achieved

* Working closely with multiple groups of diverse interests (Manufacturing Engineering, Product Design, Production floor, Quality Engineering, etc.) while investigating, supporting and implementing improvements and alternatives to existing processes

* Under general supervision, reviewing progress and results; recommending changes in procedures; operating with substantial latitude for un-reviewed action or decision

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Experience, Competencies and Education

* End of 2nd year or summer prior to 3rd year of college working toward an Engineering Degree

* Required GPA of 3.60 or higher on a 4.00 scale

* Candidates with an associate degree or technical school certificate is a plus

* Technical writing skills

* Knowledge with instrumentation and sensors

* Highly organized and motivated, with strong ability to manage/monitor detail

* Ability to communicate effectively with user group

* Demonstrated proficiency with firearms and safe handling

* Machinist experience is a plus

* Solid computer skills, with demonstrated proficiency in MS word, Excel and Outlook and Solid Works

* Language Skills

* Must have working command of the English language

* Must be able to read, write and interpret the English language

* Must be able to communicate in English verbally and in writing (basic verbal instructions, simple written memos and instructions)

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:

* Mandatory wearing of certified safety glasses

* The use of additional personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when a job task(s) is being completed in or around your assigned department or in another department, this includes safety eyewear, hearing protection, and safety footwear

* All employees are required to apply ergonomic principles to all job tasks

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

* Continuous: standing, walking, lifting, bending, pushing/pulling, and reaching

* Occasional: kneeling, sitting, squatting, overhead work, fine and gross upper body motor movement

* Maximum lift: to 30 pounds and assisted lifting

* Occasional lifting: 0 to 30 pounds
