**Employment Type:** Part time **Shift:** Day Shift **Description:** 10 hour days I Accountability Objectives: Nurse Practitioner performs medical examinations, histories, selected diagnostic and therapeutic activities necessary to assist in the prompt and appropriate delivery of care to patients of the Palliative Care or Pain Management service under supervision of authorized and Attending Physicians. II Position Qualifications: Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required. A. Education + Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with a minimum of a Master of Science in Nursing. B. Licensure / Certification + Licensed to practice in the State of Michigan as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner. + Within 24 months of hire into position: Current Certification as RN in Pain Management by ANCC (American Nursing Credentialing Center) AND Palliative Care by CHPN (Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurses) OR (see #3). + Board Certified as Nurse Practitioner in Palliative Care AND Current Certification as RN in Pain Management by ANCC (American Nursing Credentialing Center). NOTE: This certification designation is preferred within this NP role. + Currently Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. C Special Skill / Aptitudes + Strong clinical knowledge base including advanced understanding of disease pathophysiology and evidence-based interventions for patients with complex pain and/or life-limiting diseases. + Good clinical analytical skills necessary to monitor data, develop treatment plans and prescribe medication and other therapeutic interventions. + Ability to work under stressful conditions that includes caring for actively dying patients and their acutely grieving families. + Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to communicate compassionately and effectively with patients, family members and other healthcare providers. + Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups. D. Experience + Minimum of 2 years of experience working with pain or palliative patients preferred. III Duties / Responsibilities: + Meticulously takes medical histories and performs physical examinations; evaluates physical signs, symptoms and medical history to assess patient's physical condition. + Interprets medical history data, physical findings, laboratory, radiological and other tests and orders appropriate treatment and further testing approved by the supervising physician. + Recognizes and evaluates patients who require the immediate attention and, when necessary, initiates appropriate treatment to reduce suffering or distress as directed by the physician. + Competently administers treatments and medications, manages complications, controls symptoms, provides psychological and emotional care for patients and families dealing with advanced illness, pain or other symptoms as agreed to by the physician. + Effectively communicates, counsels, and compassionately assists with decision making and clarification of goals of care with patients and family in matters pertaining to quality of life, disease management and physical and mental health. Provides bereavement support to families and staff. + Maintains and signs medical records and completes appropriate billing pertaining to treatments and care administered in accordance with compliance standards + Conducts self in a manner consistent with good customer service concepts, providing the utmost compassionin all dealings with patients, families and the team. + Rounds on all patients on service, attends multidisciplinary rounds as needed and performs duties and activities as directed by physician. + Participates in work activities, research or committees to improve pain management and palliative care across the continuum within the organization and the community. + Demonstrates and actively promotes an understanding and commitment to the mission of St. Joseph Mercy Oakland through performing behaviors consistent with the Trinity Health Values. + Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations, the Trinity Health Organizational Integrity Program, including the Standards of Conduct, Code of Ethics, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behaviors. + Supports and conducts one's self in a manner consistent with customer service expectations. + In accordance with unit or departmental practice, determines that appropriate charges have been entered for the correct patient, encounter, date/time of service, with any required modifiers. Make corrections as needed per charge capture policy/practice. + In accordance with unit or departmental practice, actively participates in on-going education and communication regarding revenue management. + In accordance with unit or departmental practice, assists with tracking and monitoring of equipment assigned to the unit.
