About the Team

The Sensors Division at STR focuses on applied research and advanced technology development of innovative sensor systems, from underwater acoustics and active/passive EO/IR to radar and electronic warfare. Our work spans the modeling, development, integration, and test and evaluation required to prove a capability at each step.

The Advanced Systems Development (ASD) Group within the Sensors Division supports the DoD and IC. ASD executes a broad portfolio of undersea and overhead technologies focused on advancing sensing capabilities in contested areas. The team develops signature exploitations, implements advanced algorithms and processing, creates novel sensing approaches spanning acoustic, RF, and optical domains, advances UUV designs and subsystem technologies, and fields prototype hardware to demonstrate impactful applications.

The Role:

STR is seeking a mid-level professional with experience in advanced sonar signal processing techniques. In this role you will be part of a team focused on the design, analysis, testing, and implementations of advanced underwater systems in support of customers seeking innovative solutions to complex and challenging national security problems. You will collaborate with fellow researchers and engineers on multi-disciplinary teams within STR to develop, build, test, and demonstrate novel systems.

The preferred location for this position is Arlington, VA.

What you will Do:

Design, implement, and characterize signal processing algorithms for active and passive sonar systems including array analysis, adaptive signal processing, detection, and tracking

Develop innovative sonar system signal processing exploitations

Contribute to modeling and simulation activities in advanced undersea sensors to support and justify performance projections and system objectives

Provide technical leadership to small, multi-disciplinary teams that span hardware, software, and test & evaluation

Clearly communicate with customers, stakeholders, and prime- and sub-contractors

Who you Are:

Able to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret security clearance, for which U.S. citizenship is needed by the U.S. Government

PhD or MS degree with background in physics, applied mathematics, or related fields

Demonstrated relevant experience in active or passive acoustic sonar signal processing (5+ years for PhD, 7+ years for MS)

Proficiency in Python or MATLAB

Nice to Haves:

Breath of experience allowing for contributions to programs with other technology focuses such as EO/IR and/or RF

Ability to apply novel, non-traditional, and interdisciplinary approaches to challenging sensing problems

Experience in experimental design, data collection, and interpretation

Ability to interact with technical and non-technical customers and external teammates to understand their technical issues, frame potential solutions, and develop collaborative projects

Effective written and verbal communication skills in scientific and non-scientific venues
