Position: Mechanical Engineer - Product Design

Employment Type: Full-time, On-Site

General Description:

This job is for a Mechanical Engineer who will be responsible for product design, development, and production of mobile robotic platforms and manipulators. 

For AGVs the design process typically involved taking an existing platform and altering it to our company's or clients needs. This can be an existing in-house platform or a new platform from a vendor. A typical design process includes:

  • Integration of 3rd party electromechanical devices such as robotic manipulators, pan & tilt devices, cameras, sensors, motors, servos, linear actuators, batteries, charging stations, radios, antennas.
  • Shell designs for aesthetics and mounting rails
  • Fitting electrical components together with protective enclosures inside the robot chassis and navigation stacks. 
  • Smart design of modular mounting systems, access panels, with a key focus on ease of maintenance.
  • Wiring of components, cable runs, connectors design and selection
  • Weatherproofing of the entire system

In designing robotic manipulators, our approach begins with selecting servos and determining the joint configuration layout. Next, we design the brackets and linkages, considering aspects such as aesthetic appeal, assembly process efficiency, fabrication methods, cost-effectiveness, cable management, and overall functionality.

Various duties this position will be responsible for:

  • Work closely with the lead engineer to guide projects from concept to prototype, refine designs, and ensure integration efficacy. Post-design, your focus will shift to production oversight, coordinating with contract manufacturers to guarantee high-quality, efficient production of new platforms.
  • Engage directly with clients to assess their robotic platform requirements, and develop project plans with the lead engineer.
  • Develop quality management systems to standardize assembly and QA processes for technicians, including comprehensive inspection and testing guidelines.
  • Sourcing components overseas.
  • Proactively recruit and collaborate with subject matter experts across various engineering disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, materials, and production, as required.
  • Work remotely with contract manufacturers in the US and China. 
  • Contract manufacturer sourcing & management.

Skills Necessary

  • CAD Proficiency: Must be proficient in CAD software such as Fusion360, AutoCAD, Solidworks, and PTC Creo for creating detailed 2D and 3D models.
  • Product Development and Design: Lead and participate in product development, focusing on functional design, aesthetics, and usability.
  • Cradle to Grave Product Life Cycle: Oversee the product life cycle from initial concept through development, testing, manufacturing, and end-of-life.
  • Engineering Documentation: Create comprehensive engineering drawings and maintain thorough documentation of specifications and design processes.
  • Version Control and Documentation Management: Efficiently manage version control of design files and technical documents.
  • Project Management: Lead project teams, ensuring timely delivery of projects within budget and scope.
  • Rapid Prototyping: Utilize rapid prototyping techniques for quick iteration and validation of design concepts.
  • Fabrication Methods Expertise: Have a deep understanding of various fabrication methods, including but not limited to 6-axis CNC, laser/waterjet CNC, sheet metal bending, welding, molding, thermoforming, and diverse 3D printing technologies (FDM, Stereolithography, SLS).
  • Stress and Strain Simulation: Proficient in performing finite element analysis (FEA) for stress and strain simulations in product designs.
  • Quality Control and Assurance: Experience in implementing and maintaining quality control processes in manufacturing.
  • Materials Science: Knowledge of material properties and selection for design, manufacturing, and application.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Familiarity with industry-specific standards and regulations.
  • Communication and Team Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
