The Senior Design Engineer is responsible for taking a concept and developing it into a manufacturable finished product. He or she must consider the manufacturing processes and materials commonly used at Suncast and will use a CAD system extensively for design. Most of the product design work is for injection and blow-molded consumer products. The Senior Design Engineer is part of a cross functional team creating products expected to the meet functional, quality, cost, and timing expectations of the business.

Responsibilities:

The following duties are considered essential to this position. Other responsibilities may be assigned.

  • Develops an overall assembled product design using solid modeling techniques and design best practices based on the approved renderings provided by senior product designer
  • Works from the approved industrial design to develop components within the assembly. Evaluates concepts and determines feasible design solutions.
  • Possesses moderate knowledge of finite element analysis so that analysis at various stages of product development can be completed to determine if the design will meet performance criteria.
  • Develops project timelines and understands project management principles and can organize and prioritize many simultaneous projects.
  • Develops initial project costing and monitors product cost during development.
  • Leads cross functional meetings attended by marketing, other engineering functions, production, purchasing and quality.
  • Reviews tooling designs and production methods with the tool engineering group to develop tools for thermoplastic injection molding, blow molding, profile extrusion, stamping and roll forming. Suggest design modifications to improve productivity.
  • Reviews product designs with industrial engineering and automation engineering to ensure that the proper assembly processes and equipment are developed for the product.
  • Works with quality assurance department to develop appropriate product test plans for mechanical testing based on design intent, quality, and functional requirements of the product.
  • Works closely with production and other manufacturing groups to eliminate problems, improve productivity, and decrease costs during the first production runs.
  • Ensures that the product designs meet the packaging intent during packaging development.
  • Ensures the product bill of materials and the cost build-up are accurate before the first pilot or production run.
  • Assists with model and prototype building. These models may be made from materials such as 3D printing, foam core, wood, and plastic.
  • Evaluates product design and determine materials to be used. Consider factors such as function, production, and cost criteria.
  • Stays informed of new technology, methods, and materials within the field.
  • Provides leadership and support to other design engineers.
  • Provides resolutions to a diverse range of complex problems where analysis requires evaluation of a variety of factors.
  • Supports and complies with all Suncast safety policies, quality standards, and housekeeping methods at all times. Suncast policies have been developed to ensure compliance with employee law.

  • A 4-year Bachelor of Science degree in an appropriate engineering discipline from an accredited institution in the U.S. or a comparable foreign university with 8 plus years of product development experience. (Preferably in consumer products.)
  • High level of expertise in solid modeling (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Good conceptualization, visualization and creativity.
  • Good time management, prioritization & analytical problem solving.
  • Ability to perform detail-oriented work with high degree of accuracy.
  • Extensive design experience with plastics, sheet metal, with knowledge of material
  • specs and use.
  • Extensive experience in new product design and development
  • Knowledge & experience of GD&T required
  • Knowledge of tools (FMEA, DOE, FEA, 8D etc), a plus.
  • Complies with record-keeping and file sharing conventions.
  • Extensive experience with designing for injection and blow molding is required.
  • Project management experience is required.
