This skilled technical position coordinates all aspects of the Division of Animal Control’s spay and neuter program for its adoptable residents and assists the veterinarian in the surgical suite. The position is responsible for coordinating all in-house spay and neuter surgeries, overseeing controlled dangerous substances, scheduling procedures, surgery preparation, and supporting recovery to ensure quality procedures and compliance with regulations. Direction is given to volunteers. Supervision is received from the Animal Care Supervisor. Responsibilities

Oversee and coordinate the spay and neuter procedures for adoptable animals, which includes coordinating and scheduling all animal surgeries. Prepare the surgery suite prior to surgical operations ensuring all pre-surgical preparations are complete. Manage surgical suite inventory, record use of medications in logbooks, and record distribution of controlled dangerous substances. Monitor and evaluate all post-surgery animals which includes checking vital signs, anesthesia, and support components. Provide education and training to volunteers and staff on animal health protocols and treatment. Evaluate existing programs and services to ensure continuous improvement in meeting the needs of our animals and community; updating policies and procedures. Operate the Autoclave to sterilize surgical instruments. Develop, coordinate, and provide training on how to handle, assist, and provide care before, during, and after care to surgical patients. Maintain medical charts and logs for animals under veterinary care. Control aggressive animals with proper and humane restraint. Drive County vehicle to transport animals to veterinary offices and events. In the absence of Animal Care Supervisor, assume duties of that position. As needed, perform intake and daily care processes for the animal population, which includes incoming animals and neglect/cruelty investigations, such as health examinations and behavior assessments; administer de-wormer, inoculations, medication, and first aid to animals as directed by the Veterinarian, including the use of prescription medications and controlled substances. As needed, perform euthanasia procedures. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications

High school graduation, or the equivalent. Current Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license issued through the Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (or current license from another state, with ability to obtain Maryland RVT license following hire). Minimum 2 years of veterinary, animal hospital or animal care work experience. Minimum 1 year of clerical work experience. Possession of a valid automobile operator's license. Intermediate skill in the use of MS Office Suite. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges. Ability and willingness to obtain rabies pre-exposure vaccinations (at County expense). Required to successfully complete Maryland euthanasia training (including a written examination) within 6 months of hire. Extensive knowledge of requirements for animal care and well-being which includes animal behavior and body language. Knowledge of relevant legislation at Federal, State, and Local levels; ensures facility compliance with state animal shelter regulations. Knowledge of Federal, State, local and municipal laws and regulations related to DEA policies and requirements. Knowledge of the tools, techniques and tranquilizing equipment used in the humane handling of animals. Accurate math skills to calculate proper dosage per animal weight. Ability to effectively organize work, determine priorities and complete assigned duties with minimal supervision. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, co-workers, veterinarians, and the public. Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills. Ability and willingness to perform euthanasia procedures (the humane destruction of animals). Ability to effectively access and utilize word processing, data management systems, scheduling software, and equipment. Ability to respond quickly, calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Physical Requirements / Working Conditions

While working in this position, the employee is constantly walking, lifting up to and over 50 pounds; frequently sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and performing repetitive motions; occasionally pushing up to and over 40 pounds, pulling up to and over 40 pounds; rarely driving. While working in this position the employee is constantly working indoors, in noisy environments, near chemicals and fumes, and potentially exposed to infectious diseases. Examination Process

An evaluation of training and experience. One or more interviews. A pre-employment physical examination and drug test.
