Director, Education Leadership Program
New College is driven by a mission to be the best liberal arts college in America. New College,
the nationally recognized honors college of the State University System of Florida, is an
innovative liberal arts institution where students learn how to think, not what to think.
Founded in 1960, the College has garnered national acclaim for its rigorous academics as
students chart their own academic course with the assistance of faculty advisors and written
assessments are given instead of letter grades. Conducting research is an important part of the
undergraduate curriculum at New College with each student having to complete a senior thesis
to graduate.
The New College campus sits on the scenic Sarasota Bay and directly adjacent to one of the
fastest-growing airports in the nation. The region consistently ranks among the best for quality of
life, featuring world-famous beaches, historic architecture, and iconic fine & performing arts
institutions.
New College of Florida invites applications for the Director of Education
Leadership, starting in 2024, to help found the master’s program in Education Leadership
launching in Fall 2025.
We are a new program looking for a director to help found a groundbreaking masters program
that will produce the next generation of excellent school leaders. The program is born out of a
recognition that most masters in education leadership and principal certificate programs focus on
school operations and compliance while all the research indicates that instructional leadership is
the fundamental leadership competency leading to excellent school outcomes. We are building
a cohort-based program that ensures each graduate will be ready to lead schools that will put our
country back in the running for top educational systems when compared to similar countries.
Faculty in this program will teach in a graduate program that produces leaders who will be ready
to create exceptional school culture, lead highly performing school teams, and build talent that
leads to outlier outcomes for students and families. This includes leading instruction of core
classes and overseeing clinical coursework where future leaders will develop their teaching and
leadership skills on the front lines.
The director of this program is a unique leader who can model effective leadership practices,
recruit, select, train and develop faculty to found a premier program in education leadership.
Clinical experience in school leadership or research in effective leadership practices are
particular areas of interest as well as experience founding and building schools and/or programs.
We seek individuals who are enthusiastic about teaching future leaders to be excellent teachers
and excellent instructional leaders through competency and practicum based coursework.
The director would supervise course instruction and also teach at least one course to serve as a
model for faculty and to build stewardship of each cohort. The teaching load for each faculty
member is two to three classes per semester, plus supervision of clinical courses, cohort culture
building experiences, capstone projects, and student recruitment. Faculty members also provide
support in growing the program. Professors are expected to maintain a program of research or
creative work. The director would manage and coach the faculty to continuously improve
performance toward the program’s strategic goals.
A complete application includes:
(1) cover letter
(2) curriculum vitae
(3) statement of education leadership philosophy (including course proposals),
(4) graduate transcript (may be unofficial for initial application) or detailed leadership history
and school/student outcomes record
(5) names and email addresses of three scholars/former supervisors to provide letters of
recommendation (at least one that evaluates teaching)
Recruit, Select, Onboard Founding Faculty
Build and maintain rigorous selection process to acquire key faculty
Engage multiple key stakeholders in interview process
Onboard faculty to root all work in service of NCF mission and the program’s mission to create the next generation of world class principals measured by student outcomes
Build effective faculty culture around humility, practice, collaboration/teamwork,
constructive dialogue, and commitment
Build, Market, Brand NCF Master’s in Education Leadership
Create name recognition and brand for this program around educational excellence through principal development
Host events (in-person and virtual) to contribute to thought leadership in the field
Recruit and admit cohorts meeting goals that will support the scaling of the program
Faculty Development
Develop faculty through ongoing observations and feedback meetings of classroom instruction
Curriculum Development
Steward the creation and development of coursework, reading lists, and syllabi that break the mold of education leadership programs
Coursework will be competency focused with areas of focus proven to link directly to effective outcomes-based leadership
External Partnerships
Manage the MOUs with key partners to ensure effective clinical immersion experiences and coursework
Engage development relationships to help promote investment in the program
Research Development
Create research plan to measure and analyze effectiveness of program graduates
Use analysis and findings to strengthen program and share takeaways with the education sector broadly
Influence the thought leadership of education sector through publication and communication of findings
A Ph.D./Ed.D. in education or a related field is required by the date of employment or ten or more
years of education leadership at the principal, principal manager, and/or superintendent level
with a track record of positive outlier results. Postdoctoral or higher education teaching
experience is preferred.
