Description

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following list was developed through a job analysis; however, it is not exhaustive and other duties may be required and assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Aquatics Program. Coordinates and oversees functions and activities at the aquatic center. Acts as a point of contact and reference. Posts and distributes information of aquatic center activities for the public. Plans, develops, schedules, and implements classes and activities at the aquatic center. Directs the work activities of the aquatic employees. Approves and schedules leave for employees. Participates in the hiring and training of employees and seasonal staff. Ensures the aquatic center and all employees adhere to safety rules and regulations. Ensures employees are trained and maintain credentials appropriate to their jobs. Takes safety precautions and ensures that employees also take precautions. Maintains required certifications and credentials for the duration of employment, to include: lifeguard, certified pool operator (CPO), Water Safety Instructor (WSI), cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid. Performs rescue and emergency interventions. Ensures that emergency protocols are activated when appropriate. Ensures all safety and flotation devises and equipment are readily available and are in good working order. Replaces as needed. Serves as swim team coach. Organizes, schedules, and implements swim meets to be held at the aquatic center. Works with swim team coaches and judges to organize meets and ensure required credentials. Communicates effectively with supervisor, patrons, and the general public. Uses the computer and other office equipment to enter data regarding patron's use of the pool facilities. Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas. Represents the department and City in a positive manner.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Lifeguard Activities. Monitors and performs activities in and around City aquatic facilities to assist and protect patrons as a lifeguard. Acts as the Lead Lifeguard; provides direction and suggestions to lifeguards. Oversees lifeguards to ensure duties are performed safely and according to rules, regulations, and established protocol. Monitors patron behavior in and around the pool and all related facilities during assigned shifts to ensure and enforce safety codes and standards and prevent injuries and fatalities. Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe practices and maintains the authority to discipline and/or remove violators from City pool property. Enforces the safety, pool, and center rules with the public and patrons. Maintains required certifications and credentials to include: lifeguard, automated external defibrillator (AED), cardiopulmonary resuscitation for the CPR-professional rescuer (CPR-PR) and first aid. Identifies potential weather threats and monitors weather conditions to ensure safety; determines if lightning is present. Teaches a variety of swimming classes, and other classes in the pool. Enforces the pool and center rules with the public and participants. Monitors swimmers and visitors in the pool and surrounding pool areas. Identifies distressed patrons and responds to emergency situations by performing rescue and emergency interventions, lifesaving procedures and first aid, or activating facility emergency protocols. Ensures all safety and flotation devises and equipment are readily available and are in good working order.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Pool Operations. Performs service maintenance activities on the water and pool deck and facility to ensure cleanliness and safety. Performs testing of water chemicals and corrects/treats the water accordingly. Opens and closes the pool area for patrons. Monitors patrons signing in to use the pool and ensures an accurate maintenance of such lists. Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems. Posts, and distributes calendars of activities to the general public. Ensures appropriate and safe levels of staffing. Ensures that all classes and special events and activities are staffed appropriately. Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner. Maintains all necessary records and writes and files reports on pool activities and specific incidents and accidents as required. Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions. Keeps Aquatics and Fitness Center Director and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems. Oversees pool parties and events; provides assistance and guidance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Pool and Facility Maintenance. Performs service maintenance activities on the water and pool deck and facility to ensure cleanliness and safety. Performs testing of water chemicals and corrects/treats the water accordingly. Inspects and maintains a safe and clean pool, pool deck, and facility environment; scrubs and clean the pool deck and surrounding areas; skims the pool from removal of debris; cleans the skimmer baskets; and utilizes the aquatic vacuum. Inspects and maintains swimming facility, including general cleaning duties and pool maintenance. Performs tasks as required, utilizing established rules and guidelines. Utilizes specialized equipment and conducts tests to verify safe chemical levels of the water. Performs and interprets water testing results; responds and treats the pool water as indicated, adding chemicals as needed. Monitors stock levels of chemicals and notifies supervisor when supplies need to be reordered. Cleans and sanitizes pool after human contamination; closes and reopens pool when appropriate. Utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE). Maintains logs and records of water testing results and corrections. Performs basic custodial duties to maintain clean restrooms and facilities. Utilizes specialized equipment and conducts tests to verify safe chemical levels of the water. Stores chemicals as required, in a secured, isolated location. Limits access to the chemicals. Maintains stock levels of chemicals; orders chemicals and other supplies and equipment as needed. Obtains water samples and conducts testing of water chemicals and content as required. Interprets water testing results; responds and treats the pool water as indicated, adding chemicals as needed. Collects and empties trash.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Customer Service. The employee assists all visitors to include greeting visitors, addressing inquiries and processing payments to provide exceptional service. Greets visitors. Answers the telephone; responds accordingly or routes to appropriate individual. Responds to requests and addresses inquiries. Represents the City in a professional manner. Addresses complaints; refers complex issues and complaints to supervisor. Maintains a communication log to pass along all pertinent information to staff. Makes class, lessons, and equipment reservations for patrons.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Performs other job-related duties as assigned or required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (* Can be acquired on the job) *Knowledge of City policies, procedures, and practices. Knowledge of the methods, principles and techniques involved in lifesaving, first aid and water safety. Knowledge of specific lifesaving equipment. Knowledge of first aid, automated external defibrillator (AED), CPR-PR skills (including adult, child, and infant, as well as use of resuscitation and bag valve masks). Knowledge and skills in the areas of public relations, accident/injury prevention, patron, and facility surveillance. Knowledge of swimming instruction techniques. Writing skills to prepare logs, posters, and advertisements using correct English, grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Math skills to perform basic calculations and chemical proportions. Reading skills to interpret directions, ordinances, and codes. Ability to swim proficiently and effectively perform lifesaving duties. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to attend training classes and maintain required credentials. Ability to communicate effectively using written and oral methods, with other employees, and the general public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, other employees, patrons, and the general public. Ability to respond rapidly and appropriately to emergency and life-threatening circumstance. Ability to use computers and office productivity software programs. Ability to operate office equipment to include multi-line phones, copiers, fax machines, typewriter, and others. Ability to plan and implement classes, programs, and events. Ability to follow required content and lesson plans for class instruction. Ability to work independently with limited supervision. Ability to make appropriate decisions in emergency situations. Ability to perform light custodial duties. Ability to use specialized equipment and tools. Ability to deal with all contacts in a courteous and patient manner. Ability to be flexible and adapt to changes in schedule. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to handle stressful situations and use good judgment. Ability to use computers and office productivity software. Ability to perform first aid, CPR, and use emergency lifesaving techniques. Ability to lift and carry heavy items, including people. Minimum Qualifications Possess a high school diploma or GED. Minimum of two (2) years of previous work experience with the general public; two (2) years of previous work experience in aquatic programs; two (2) years of previous work experience as a lifeguard or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills, and abilities commensurate with the requirements of this job. Possess CPR and First Aid certifications. Possess Certified Pool Operator (CPO) designation. Possess Water Safety Instructor (WSI) designation. Possess Lifeguard Certification. Possess USA Swim Team Certification or the ability to obtain within 3 months of employment. Possess a current and valid driver's license; must be insurable. Ability to travel throughout the City. Ability to work nonstandard work hours to include extended, evening, and weekends. Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screen.

Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities; recurring lifting moderately heavy items such as record boxes. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average agility and dexterity.

Requirements
