Job Title: CUSTODIANSupervised by/Reports to: Principal FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Job Goals: Under the general direction of the school Principal, the employee maintains the cleanliness and sanitary conditions of school buildings and grounds. Reports any equipment failures. Performs basic maintenance tasks such as replacing windowpanes, light bulbs or switches, painting, etc. Qualifications: Knowledge of cleaning methods and products. Ability to climb ladders, push, lift, stop, bend, carry. Some basic knowledge of hand tools and equipment related to custodian/maintenance work, i.e., buffer, shampooer, stripper, lawn tractor. Ability to communicate with supervisor and co-workers. Reading skills to understand written instructions. Ability to transport furniture and to operate cleaning and ground maintenance equipment. Ability to accomplish assigned custodial duties. Some basic knowledge of electrical, carpenter, and plumbing repairs. Writing skills to order supplies, complete forms. Math skills to maintain inventory, mix gas and chemicals formulas. Ability to stand; walk for extended periods of time. Ability to supervise the work of others. Knowledge of use of chemical cleaning compounds. Knowledge of safe handling of human waste and body fluids. Possess a valid Alabama Driver's License. Willing to work overtime as required. Any combination of education and experience, which provides the qualifications, listed above. Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions: General Cleaning Cleans and sanitizes offices, lunchrooms, gyms, classrooms, lobbies, halls, teachers' lounges, workrooms and restrooms. Empties trash, wipes off lunchroom tables. Sweeps, mops, removes scuffs, buffs, strips and waxes floors. Cleans and disinfects commodes, sinks, mirrors, walls. Empties trash cans and inserts new liners. Fills sanitary, towel, soap and tissue dispensers. Mops and disinfects floors. Sprays air fresheners. Cleans drinking fountains, sweeps down webs, dusts windowsills, cleans doormats. Clean lockers. Washes windows inside and outside. Cleans all metal surfaces with metal cleaner. Vacuums, pre-spots, and shampoos carpets. Water flowers. Cleans up classrooms, restroom, etc. after sick children. Washes wet and dust mops. Ground Maintenance Maintains the appearance of the school campus. The campus includes ball fields, grass areas, drives, walkways and parking areas. Rakes leave and operates leaf blower. Mows grass using riding lawn mower, tractor or push mower. Operates weed eater to cut back weeds; trims shrubs with hedge trimmer. Picks up trash, tree limbs, rocks, etc. from grass area, parking area, and walkways. Plants shrubs, trees and sows grass seeds. Trims tree limbs. Applies weed and pest control chemical, waters grounds. Empties trash cans and replaces liners. Sweeps steps, entryway, and sidewalks; cleans off ice as needed. Cleans ditches; fills in potholes in drives. Maintains and repairs chain link fences. Repairs or replaces swing chains, etc. and other playground equipment. Repair or replaces wooden bleachers. Redistributes gravel, places cross ties to form barriers. May service equipment related to grounds maintenance. Performs basic repairs to tractors, mowers, and weed eaters. Lubricates, changes oil, sharpens blades, etc. Building/Equipment Maintenance Maintains appearance of building; performs basic repairs. Performs minor electrical repairs, replaces plugs, and switch covers. Repairs or replaces lights and ballast's. Replaces incandescent and fluorescent bulbs. Performs minor plumbing repairs, repairs wax seal, tank seal, fluid master, supply lines, changes faucets, replaces commode seats, unstops sinks and toilets, repairs traps. Paints interior and exterior surfaces; prepares for painting, tapes windows, and baseboards, places drop cloths, etc. Cleans up and removes equipment after completing job. Installs and repairs window shades. Performs minor door, window lock, bulletin board, and doorknob repair. Replaces ceiling tiles. Replaces air conditioning filters, removes, cleans and reinstalls air conditioning units. Sets thermostats, lights pilot light in gas heaters. Replaces desktops, racks, holders and bathroom stalls. Repairs or replaces gutters and siding. Makes minor repair to furniture. Performs basic repairs on laminating, copying and duplicating machines and pencil sharpeners. Assembles tables, lockers, desks, cabinets, shelves, etc. Hangs maps, screens, T.V.'s, racks, etc. Reports all major maintenance problems to Maintenance Department. Miscellaneous Locks and unlocks doors, locks and opens traffic gates. Turns on and turns off lights, heat or air conditioning. Sets thermostats. Checks to make sure no children are present in building at end of the day. Moves furniture and equipment to include filing cabinets, books, tables, desks, and etc. Assists with loading and unloading of supplies, transports supplies to classrooms. Sets up lunchroom tables. Picks up incoming and outgoing mail. Stores and loads recyclables. Locks and unlocks gas pumps for buses. Guides visitors, takes telephone messages. Orders and inventories janitorial supplies to include mops, brooms, bathroom supplies, buffers, shampooers, vacuum cleaners, strippers, wax, paper products, deodorizers and disinfectants. Purchases for supplies for school store and runs school store. Runs errands, picks up supplies, equipment or workers. Supervises student or corrections workers. Maintains related work records. Reports broken equipment to supervisor. Summer Cleaning Removes and replaces all furniture from rooms; strips and waxes all floors to include classrooms, lunchroom and halls. Cleans light fixtures, dusts all bookshelves, chairs, desks, woodwork, windows, blinds and trash cans. Cleans bathroom. May supervise summer employees. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s). Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk and use hands to finger, to handle, or feel objects, equipment, or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, squat, crouch and kneel. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull carry and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include near vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Salary: Salary to be established by The Limestone County School's District Salary Schedule.
