LPN - Licensed Practical Nurse / 40 hour Day - BWH Dermatology Chestnut HillThe Triage LPN is responsible for functions necessary for the complete and efficient management of patients through the dermatology ambulatory facilities. This position performs all of the following functions: handling patient phone calls in accordance with Department standards, screening patient calls for urgency of medical treatment, call or fax pharmacies with appropriate medication prescriptions and renewals as directed by the physician, this includes the completion of prior authorization forms if needed. Responsible for discussing normal lab and pathology results with patients as directed by physician. Performs and documents all triage interaction, lab results, and prescription renewals in EPIC and in accordance with BWH and Department procedures. Other responsibilities include; assisting physicians with procedures, treatments, and or instructions to patients. In addition, s/he performs as part of a team with other colleagues in the practice to assure that the necessary universal office needs are met and completed.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Primary Responsibilities (90%): Performs all triage functions, handling patient phone calls in accordance with Department standards.Screen patient calls for urgency of medical treatment and determine/recommend same day or future appointment.Post-op phone calls 24 hours after surgical appointment (assess s/sx of infection, discuss wound care and answer any questions).Call or fax pharmacies with appropriate medication prescriptions and renewals as directed by the physician.Including the completion of prior authorization forms.Responsible for discussing normal lab and pathology results with patients as directed by physician.Assist/set up any further appointments/testing required/requested by MD.Patient care management/coordination - works with physicians/clinical support/scheduling staff to ensure that patient care needs are met.Performs and documents all triage interaction, lab results, and prescription renewals (including iPledge) in EPIC and in accordance with BWH and Department procedures.Monitor Gateway messages.Respond/forward to MD as appropriate.Maintain/update triage reference material.2. Secondary Responsibilities (10%)Performs all functions including; assisting with the processing and disposition of patients, facilitate patient flow, assist with procedures and apply wound dressings as directed by physician.Performs patient education regarding: informed consent, wound care and medication instruction.Accurately performs patient intake, using two patient identifiers.Keep physicians and patients up to date on patient volume and wait times during sessions.Responsible for procedure set-up and physician assistance for all dermatological procedures, using sterile technique. Procedures include punches, shaves, biopsies, ED & C, excisions and cosmetics.Responsible for drawing local anesthetic/administer injections and provide patient education/teaching as needed.Responsible for stocking inventory of all equipment and supplies used for the delivery of clinical care.Autoclaves instruments for use in the department. Follows infection control and regulatory compliance guidelines.All other duties as assigned, including cross-coverage to front office, and travel to satellite practices when necessary.QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS Graduate of an LPN program, current Massachusetts Licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse.Must be certified in Basic Life Support or willing to become certified within 3 months.Experience with autoclaving preferred.SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIREDMust have necessary analytical, judgmental and interpersonal skills to deal effectively withpatients, families and co-workers.Communicates with physicians and supervisor to determine needs and to solve problems regarding issues.Ability to handle sensitive information.Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.Ability to sit, stand, or move about for extended periods.Ability to work in close contact with patients (witness medical concerns).Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with fellow employees.Must demonstrate ability to work as a team member.Willingness to cover for other employees as the need arises.Assists patients in a manner that promotes the perception that the staff is courteous, efficient, and interested in their health care.Treats all patients with dignity and professionalism.EEO StatementBrigham & Women's Hospital is an Affirmative Action Employer.
