Key Essential Functions and Accountabilities of the Job

  • Ensures educational activities are congruent with SEARHC's mission, goals, values, priorities, and resources.
    • Promotes the SEARHC Seven Standards of Excellence.
    • Is responsible for the coordination and quality of the nursing service with regulatory requirements with certifications including BLS, PALS, ACLS, and TNCC.
    • Ensures that all nursing staff are oriented to the same standards, using the ASHNHA competencies when available.
    • Works in collaboration with the department managers and outlying clinic managers.
    • Familiarizes all consortium staff with appropriate policies and procedures relevant to their skill level.
    • Provides coordination of the ACLS, PALS, BLS, NRP, and other programs.
    • Provides coordination activities for classes that are requested by the NEC to be provided from outside contract instructors or companies.
  • Oversees the IHS Emergency Pediatric Hybrid program for the consortium.
    • Provides ongoing evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of the educational activities to ensure that they maintain and enhance professional development that promotes the delivery of cost-effective, high-quality healthcare.
    • Collaborates with others in the practice of nursing professional development at the institutional, local, regional, and state levels.
  • Serves as the liaison for clinical education opportunities provided at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital for internal and external agencies including UAS CNA students, UAA nursing students, and Village Health Occupational Program (VHOP) students.
    • Assists in clinical rotations at MEMC for the CNA program.
    • Facilitates communication with other health care providers in the community related to continuing education opportunities and coordination of services.
    • Participates in and uses evidence-based research to identify strategies for improving professional development activities, nursing practice, and patient outcomes.
    • Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning, delivering, and managing nursing professional development activities.
  • Oversees SEARHC's trauma registrar program
    • Works with trauma registrars to maintain each facility's trauma registry
    • Works with each trauma coordinator to meet state requirements and maintain designation
    • Assists outlying clinics and Wrangell in becoming trauma designations.
    • Works with finance on trauma billing throughout the consortium.
    • Assists in trauma education for each trauma designation facility.
  • Serves as the lead for the MEMC/CG Medivac staff and assist the United States Coast Guard in Medivac services.
    • Oversees scheduling, training, competencies, and ongoing education for MEMC staff members participating in the CG Medivac services at MEMC.
    • Works with the Coast Guard and Administration to assist in providing these services.
  • Fulfills assignments delegated CNO in hospital emergency events.
    • Acts rapidly and effectively in any emergency.
  • Attends and participates in at least 50% of Nurse Executive Committee meetings
    • Applies information presented in meetings.
    • Participates in Nursing Service's goal setting.
    • Initiates discussion with Clinical Nurse Educator regarding area or department issues.
    • Completes annual competencies and evaluation materials.
    • Maintains certifications and licensure
    • Refers unresolved problems with patients/visitors/co-workers to Chief Nursing Officer for resolution
    • Addresses employee concerns consistent with Human Resources Policy.
  • Is responsible for general oversight of workforce development programs including CNA and Medical Assistant programs.
    • Supports Clinical Educators in development and implementation of their programs.
Other Functions
  • Supervises the trauma registrar program throughout the consortium at the trauma designation sites.
  • Assists the trauma coordinator at MEMC with updating trauma protocols and procedures.
  • Assists the outlying clinics in their trauma program designation/recertification, trauma education on policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates schedules of those acting as instructors of classes (e.g., BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, and TNCC) throughout the consortium.
  • Supervises the IHS Emergency Pediatric Hybrid Program at MEMC and assist outlying clinics in rotating staff through the IHS Emergency Pediatric Hybrid simulation lab.
  • Works with HR to assist in clinical rotations for CNAs at MEMC.
  • Assists in cross-training nursing staff throughout the consortium in the outlying clinics and MEMC.
  • Supervises the staff members participating in the CG medivac services.

  • Supervisory responsibilities are required.
Additional Details:

Education, Certifications, and Licenses Required
  • Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing
  • Current full, unrestricted Registered Nursing license in Alaska or other U.S. state required. Direct Hire must have applied for an Alaska nursing license before start date. Agency staff must have an active Alaska license.
  • ACLS, BLS, PALS, and TNCC instructor certification preferred or must obtained within 1 year after hire
  • PALS and NRP must be obtained within 6 months of hire and maintained biannually thereafter
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience Required
  • 3 years of professional clinical instructor experience
  • 5 years of professional nursing experience with minimum 2 years as staff RN in a specialty (ER, ICU, OB, OR)
  • Prior Emergency Room/Trauma and/or Remote Rural experience preferred
  • May substitute professional clinical instructor experience for clinical nursing experience on a year-for-year basis
  • Two years of supervisory experience required
Knowledge of
  • Professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, diagnosis, processes, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population
  • Specialized knowledge in the nursing management and care of adult and geriatric patient problems and conditions is required. As well as Hospital and Consortium Policies and Procedures to fully comply with and instruct others on proper application of these measures.
  • Relevant educational content and appropriate methods of delivery and the ability to develop and facilitate relevant and effective education for adult learners.

  • Provide guidance and leadership
  • Works cooperatively with others by establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and other healthcare team members

  • Microsoft Excel, Access, Word
  • Advanced application, i.e., Res-Q software, requirement for knowledge and skills as a super user in EHR and for operation of human patient simulators, and student feedback
