Background: The Comprehensive Readiness for Aircrew Flying Training (CRAFT) initiative, launched in 2020 by the Air Education and Training Command (AETC), enhances pilot training through a holistic approach aimed at strengthening the physical and mental capabilities of Air Force pilots. Designed to tackle the demands of flying high-performance aircraft and modern aerial warfare, CRAFT integrates three core pillars into its curriculum: educational foundation, performance enhancement, and early injury prevention. This structured program extends across undergraduate and graduate training, enriching learning outcomes, promoting teamwork, and building resilience with value-added training touchpoints.

Aligned with the 19th Air Force Pilot Training Transformation, CRAFT utilizes the latest in instructional technology and teaching methods to prepare pilots for both current and future combat challenges. It also ensures a smooth transition to operational units, optimizing human performance continuity with state-of-the-art technology and effective data management, thereby advancing the Air Force’s human weapon system.

Scope of Work The Cognitive Performance Specialist (CPS) at LMR Technical Group, plays a critical role in the Human Performance Optimization (HPO) initiative. This initiative is dedicated to enhancing the mental skills and cognitive capabilities of fighter pilots to improve decision-making, reaction times, and stress management, thereby increasing overall mission effectiveness and safety. The CPS will develop, implement, and evaluate cognitive enhancement programs and conduct both individual and group therapy sessions. Additionally, the role involves conducting research across cognitive enhancement and accelerated learning and developing courseware to prepare USAF aircrew training personnel for the rigors of combat aviation. Daily activities may include programming, teaching academics in a traditional classroom setting, one-on-one performance consultations, and group briefings. Train and educate fighter pilots in individual and group settings on various cognitive, mental, and behavioral skills, using evidence-based peer-reviewed literature. Provide psychological support and counseling to improve mental health and cognitive resilience. Assist in the planning, scheduling, execution, and validation of the HP program's efficiency and effectiveness. Utilize simulation technology and biofeedback to enhance performance in combat or high-pressure situations. Work closely with medical personnel, military commanders, and a multidisciplinary team of HP specialists including strength and conditioning coaches, performance dietitians, and physical therapists. Develop and deliver cognitive performance content and materials for educational purposes, maintaining all professional certifications and credentials. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: Master’s degree in Psychology, Counseling, Human Performance, Sport Psychology, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or a related field from an institution accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). Preferred Qualifications: Doctoral degree in Psychology, Counseling, Human Performance, Sport Psychology, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or related fields. Certification as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) is desired. Current, unrestricted license to practice in the respective field. 10+ years combined experience with a master’s degree (or 5+ years with doctoral-level degree) providing cognitive performance services in high-performance environments such as NCAA Division I athletes, Olympic athletes, professional sports participants, or similar man-machine high-performance environments.
