Summary:
Keeps the District's school buildings in such a state of housekeeping excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (other duties may be assigned)
  • Clean and preserve designated spaces, equipment, etc. in assigned buildings (i.e., including but not limited to: clean and sanitize restrooms, classrooms, offices, multipurpose rooms, corridors, stairs, windows, sinks, drinking fountains, carpets, garbage cans, wastebaskets, gym, cafeteria and other areas as directed by the principal or assigned supervisor. Clean, mop, wash, buff and vacuum floors)
  • Maintain grounds and perform seasonal ground work (including but not limited to: sidewalk care, snow removal, lawn care, shrubs & landscaping, parking lots, driveways and fencing, trash pick-up)
  • Restock disposable items and provide accurate inventory usage and data (including but not limited to: classroom and restroom supplies, including paper towels, soap and related items; store all supplies, tools & equipment neatly; request additional supplies according to established procedures)
  • Assist visiting public utilizing the facilities with directions within the building in a courteous manner; obtain and set up needed equipment. Cooperate and share professionally with other members of the staff.
  • Perform minor adjustments and repairs as needed (including but not limited to: proficient in the use of hand tools, small power tools, gardening tools, various types of pipe, wire, lumber, building materials, cleaning supplies, ladders and scaffolds; perform regularly scheduled preventive maintenance, changing bulbs, clearing drains, clearing plugged toilets, adjusting thermostats)
  • Promote energy conservation (including but not limited to: turning off lights, closing proper doors, regulating thermostats, checking pipes/fixtures for leaks, checking windows for cracks/caulking)
  • Communicate with Principal/Supervisor or other site personnel or students for the purpose of providing information regarding activities, safety and/or proper maintenance of facilities. Report any damage to school property and any maintenance needs.
  • Assure the security of the building and grounds (lock/unlock gates and doors, check windows, turns lights on/off, rooms and buildings are checked for fire hazards)
  • Exercise knowledge of proper safety techniques (including but not limited to: wearing proper personal protective equipment, handling of materials, lifting techniques, use of all equipment and climbing apparatus)

  • Demonstrate regular and reliable attendance
  • Other duties as assigned

Professional Standards:

Minimum Education or Experience
High school graduate or GED
Previous custodial experience preferred

Sit Rare. Typical sittings only occurs on breaks at which time it is optional. When cleaning low level areas or working near floor workers may have the option to sit.
Stand/Walk Constant. Workers are on feet performing multiple tasks including cleaning of windows, sweeping, mopping, buffing floors, dusting, vacuuming and performing various cleaning activities. Walking occurs in school on even tile, concrete and carpeted surfaces, on stairs and bleachers. Walking outdoors occurs on various terrain and sidewalks that may be wet, ice or snow covered. Workers will negotiate other equipment, desks and cleaning materials.
Low Level Work Frequent. Includes work that requires bending, squatting or kneeling. Workers must reach down to floor for tasks including picking up objects when cleaning, cleaning legs of chairs and desks and when moving or adjusting rugs and mats. When changing pads on floor machine and scrubber, workers must lay or kneel on floor while reaching under the machine. Workers will reach to a height of 8 inches repeatedly for up to 45 minutes when setting up gym for games.
Climb Occasional. Workers occasionally climb on ladders and step stools to get equipment and supplies off of shelves, when working on lights and ceilings.
Stairs Occasional to Frequent. Workers will climb up and down 8 inch steps to get to various parts of the school. High school workers climb up and down steps frequently.
Balance Constant. Worker must maintain balance to prevent falling when walking, standing, climbing or crouching on various surfaces and weather conditions including ice and snow. Workers must maintain balance when working in the Geanie Lift at heights of 25-30 feet.
Bend/Stoop Frequent. Defined as bending body forward or laterally by bending spine at the waist, requiring use of the lower extremities and back muscles. Workers must bend when putting trash bags into cans and bins, when performing various cleaning activities in the bathroom around toilets or under sinks, while cleaning windows or when gathering cleaning supplies off of shelving of different heights. Workers may bend when shoveling snow off of sidewalks and step. The workers will need to bend when they change the batteries on the rider machine. This is done rarely.
  • Frequent. Overhead reaching occurs on an occasional to frequent basis for up to 2 minutes at a time when cleaning windows, changing light bulbs or working with the ceiling tiles. Workers must be able to reach shelves at a height of 73 inches to retrieve supplies or equipment needed. When setting the gym up for games, the workers must be able to reach up to 36 inches and 74 inches to bring chairs down and again to hang up.
Occasional. Reaching away from body when vacuuming and cleaning around toilets and in tight spaces. Workers must reach out with a wingspan of 36 inches to raise and lower cafeteria tables.
Twisting (Trunk) Occasional. Mopping, cleaning around toilets and sinks, vacuuming and shoveling require twisting.
Handle/Grasp Constant. Handling/gripping is required to handle cleaning equipment including vacuums, mobs, scrubbers, shovels, snow blowers and carts. Other objects workers must also grasp include garbage cans, bags, tables and desks.
Fine Manipulation Occasional. Workers must pick up small pieces of debris or garbage, handling equipment operating controls to raise and lower bleacher, to run the floor machine, handling screws, nuts and small equipment pieces.
Lift Occasional. Workers must lift garbage bags weighing up to 60 lbs from a height of 36 inches to a height of 49 inches into the dumpster. Workers lift 50 lb buckets of sand and salt from the floor up to a height of 27 inches to dump into the spreader. Workers lift 40 lbs of wax from floor up to a height of 17 inches. Cases of supplies range from 12 lbs up to 23 lbs are lifted from floor up to a height of 25 inches. Cases of clay which can weigh up to 50 lbs. The clay is lifted from waist height down onto the floor.

Frequent. Workers lift up to 30 lbs on a frequent basis. This include smaller trash cans which are lifted up to 39 inches, snow shoveling and vacuums weighing 21 lbs. Workers must lift the recycle containers up to 39 inches. These containers can weigh anywhere between 10-50 lbs.
Carry Occasional. Workers will carry up to 50 lbs including boxes of paper, recycle containers and buckets of sand and salt up to 20 feet. Workers will also carry ladders weighing up to 40 lbs 200 feet.
Push/Pull (Upper Extremity) Occasional: Worker must push with a force of up to 100 lbs when using the snow blower or moving the staging carts up to 200 feet. Worker must push scorer tables and rack of chairs up to 300 feet. Ability to push inward with a force of 40 lbs with a wingspan of 36 inches to close cafeteria tables.
Frequent: Workers will push utility carts, vacuums, and transports supplies on carts, dollies and pallet jacks with a force of 20 lbs.
Push/Pull (Lower Extremity) Occasional. Workers must stand on one leg and push with a force of up to 10 lbs with other foot to open cafeteria tables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment.
