CLASSIFIED SERVICE JOB SPECIFICATION

JOB CLASS: CUSTODIAL

LEVEL: I

POSITION TITLE: CUSTODIAN - DAY OR NIGHT SHIFT

CLASS DEFINITION:

Positions within this class are characterized by having as their primary assignment cleaning and plant maintenance functions under the specific direction of the supervisor assigned. The custodial positions may have more than one supervisor depending upon the shift assigned or the time of year. Positions within this class have specific routines which must be followed in addition to having other tasks to perform which may vary from day to day or seasonally. Levels within this class are differentiated by virtue of the degree of primarily custodial duties which are required in relation to other associated duties such as driver, warehouse worker and light maintenance work. Shift differentials are typically available for night work.

POSITION DEFINITION:

Under general supervision, to perform custodial services required to maintain assigned building and adjacent ground areas in a clean, orderly, and secure manner; and to do related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
•Sweep, mop, wax and seal floors
•Vacuum rugs and carpets
•Dust, wash, and polish furniture and woodwork
•Empty and clean waste receptacles
•Wash windows and walls
•Clean restrooms
•Sweep sidewalks and pick up papers
•Clean drinking fountains and polish metal work;
•Fill paper and soap dispensers
•Replace light bulbs; replenish supplies; turn out lights and lock doors and windows
•Guard assigned areas to prevent vandalism
•Assist in moving, arranging, and setting up furniture and equipment for special events and meetings including civic center assignments
•Make minor non-technical repairs.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Education and Experience - Any combination equivalent to completion of high school and one year experience in custodial work is desirable.

Knowledge and Abilities - Knowledge of the methods, material, and equipment used in cleaning various types of building surfaces and items of furniture; ability to maintain schedules providing for regular cleaning of all facilities assigned; ability to carry out oral and written instructions; ability to work cooperatively with others; ability to work with and around children; ability to relate well to parents and other adults.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

Visual capability to read handwritten or typed documents, and the display screen of various office equipment and machines
Able to conduct verbal conversation in English and other designated languages
Able to hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels)
Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, walk
Able to stand in one space for sustained periods
Able to sit for sustained periods of time
Able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and 100 pounds occasionally
Able to push and pull objects weighing up to 300 pounds
Able to sustain strenuous manual labor for 8 hours
Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder external rotation and internal rotation
Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder abduction and adduction
Able to exhibit full range of motion for elbow flexion and extension
Able to exhibit full range of motion for back flexion
Able to exhibit full range of motion for hip flexion and extension
Able to exhibit full range of motion for knee flexion
Able to work in a wide range of temperatures.
Able to work at various elevated heights in a safe and effective manner.
Able to work with chemical agents in a safe and effective manner without allergic reaction.
Able to exhibit manual dexterity necessary to perform fine maintenance procedures and operate both manual and power hand tools in a safe and effective manner.
Able to operate material handling equipment, machinery and powered vehicles in a safe and effective manner

Westside Union School District is located on the west side of the Antelope Valley, 65 miles northeast of Los Angeles. Our schools serve the communities of Quartz Hill, Lancaster, Palmdale, Leona Valley, and Antelope Acres.
